While the GCSE results have been record breaking this year, younger children are still struggling to write properly, according to education experts.
Writing abilities are trailing behind other key skills, like maths and reading, with one in five (around 104,700) seven year olds failing to reach the standard Level 2, according to recent Department for Education (DFE) data.
Boys are lagging behind girls, with 24% of boys struggling to reach writing standards, and 13% of girls.
“A solid foundation in reading, writing, maths and science in the early years of education is crucial to a child’s success in later life,” says Schools Minister Nick Gibb.
