Prince William has opened up about ‘struggling’ with life as a father, while on a trip to Vietnam to raise awareness of the illegal wildlife trade.

The Prince has 2 children with wife Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge: 3-year-old Prince George and 1-year-old Princess Charlotte. And as any parent of young children will know: life with toddlers can be, well, quite the transition…

The future King of England told Vietnamese chat show Talk Vietnam:

“Well, as the other parents in the room will testify, there’s wonderful highs and there’s wonderful lows.

“It’s been quite a change for me personally. I’m very lucky in the support I have from Catherine. She is an amazing mother and a fantastic wife.

“But I’ve struggled at times, the alteration from being a single, independent man to going into marriage and then having children is life-changing.”

While the dad-of-2 certainly lives a unique and undeniably privileged life, this is one area we can definitely sympathise with: it is hard, no matter who you are or what you have, to come to terms with the enormous responsibility of little lives to look after.

But the well-intentioned comments received a mixed response on social media.

One user wrote: “Really? With nannies, chefs, personal assistants, no mortgage, few employment work days a year and a gorgeous wife? ???”

While another added: “Me too Willi but that’s because the government give you a fair chunk of my money that I could spend on my kids.”

However, some were quick to defend Prince William’s right to speak his mind: “We ALL struggle with something in our lives & parenthood/marriage are HUGE! Happy #PrinceWilliam spoke HIS truth “ said one Twitter user.

And another agreed: “We all have struggles and admitting to having a struggle does not make you a bad person #PrinceWilliam”

But the hardships of parenthood are outweighed by the positives, it seems - as the Prince went on to add:

“I adore my children very much and I’ve learnt a lot about myself and about family just from having my own children.”

During the candid interview, the Prince opened up about his kids’ personalities, revealing that mini monarch-to-be Prince George is a bit of a tinker, just like any other 3-year-old.

“George is a right little rascal sometimes. He keeps me on my toes, but he’s a sweet boy.”

Meanwhile a girl in the family in Princess Charlotte was quite the adjustment.

He then spoke about his hopes for his 2 little ones, saying:

“I would like them to grow up with more simple aspirations.

“I think there's a lot of huge aspirations and people living with an enormous amount of stuff that they don't necessarily need. The materialism of the world I find quite tricky sometimes.

“I would like George and Charlotte to grow up being a little bit more simple in their approach and their outlook and just looking after those around them and treating others as they would like to be treated.”
