Recall of toys made in China
Toy company Mattel Inc. has issued a voluntary recall of almost one and a half million Chinese-made toys over fears that their paint contains too much lead.
Mattel Inc, which owns Fisher Price, said the recall affects almost 100,000 toys that have been on sale in the US and UK since May this year.
An internal probe found the Chinese manufacturer had used a non-approved paint pigment, violating its safety standards, the company said.
Mattel said that it was removing the products from shops immediately and would also intercept incoming shipments.
There's no need to panic if your child has been playing with a toy that's part of the recall. Lead paint is a potentially serious danger, but it can't be inhaled or absorbed through the skin, so a child would have to chew the paint off a toy and eat a significant amount of it in order to get sick.
