Mountain Buggy, that well-known creator of all-terrain pushchairs (ATPs), is set to make life transporting two children a bit easier - and exciting – will its free rider, a buggy board that can transform into a child’s scooter without any tools.

The Mountain Buggy free rider is touted as being “the first 2-in-1, click-and-go scooter and buggy board”, and we here at MFM HQ certainly haven’t seen anything like it before, though we have been wondering why no one thought of it sooner! But we’re not the only ones to make little happy noises about it – it has already won an Innovation Award at Kind + Jugend, the mother of all international baby and child fairs, hosted every year in Germany.

“We really liked the idea of a family travelling to the park together and then the child riding for some fun and independence,” said Jamie Andrews, the lead designer. One of the key features that makes this possible is the rear wheel. It changes easily from a fixed position, which is used when the free rider’s in scooter mode, to a full swivel, for when it’s fulfilling its role as a buggy board.

The free rider weighs 2.5kg and can handle your child up to the weight of 20kg. It’s currently compatible with Mountain Buggy’s own Urban Jungle and Duo buggies, and the ball’s already in motion to make it work with the rest of the range and with other buggy brands.

The price we’ve heard mention is around the £79 mark, and rumour has it we may see it in the UK this Spring.
