Specialist midwives to tackle postnatal depression

Plans for one mental-health specialist for every maternity unit by 2017

These specialist midwives, who will be best placed to spot and help with the early signs of PND, will be in place on every maternity unit in England by 2017.

It’s thought one in 10 new mothers develops PND, and concerns have been raised that mental-health services for mums are worrying patchy.

It’s hoped this scheme will allow the specialist midwives to build a good relationship with new mums who appear to be at risk, and so help prevent many cases of PND from developing.
