Americans could see a rise in taxes on junk food and soft drinks after a report urged action to help reduce “the serious health threat” of childhood obesity.

The report by the Institute of Medicine and National Research Council is also encouraging communities to take action by broadening children’s access to recreational facilities.

Obesity rates are soaring among US children, leading to an increase in early heart disease, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes.
