US actress January Jones has candidly opened up about life as a single mum in the new issue of Red magazine.

The actress - who Mad Men fans will know best as Betty Draper - gave birth to now 5-year-old son Xander Dane Jones in September 2011.

She’s never publicly revealed the identity of his father (as is her right) - but she did discuss the emotional highs and lows of single motherhood during her interview with the mag.

“I don’t want to be bad cop but, to have [Xander’s] respect, I have to be both,' she admitted.

"I’m an emotionally immature person. I’m an actor for God’s sake. I see myself behaving like a child all the time.

“This morning, I made Xander eggs, toast, a smoothie. He spat out his blueberries, threw the eggs into the sink, was playing with his toast, and I just lost my s**t.

“And I took the plate and threw it in the garbage, in tears. Someone needs to be the mature one here, but I had a full tantrum.”

She also explored the different male and female influences in her son’s life - and the impact they might be having on him.

“Maybe I should get a manny,” she said. “But Xander has a lot of bro time with the neighbour dads and my dad, who is super young.

“It’s good to have strong women around a man to teach him to respect women.

“He doesn’t have a male person saying ‘don’t cry’ or ‘you throw like a girl’. All those s***ty things that dads accidentally do.”

The 39-year-old star went a step further and divulged how being a mum has affected her dating life, too. Quite a bit, by the sounds of it...

"After I had Xander, I went on a couple of dates and I was like, 'I’d rather be at home sleeping, watching TV or hanging out with my kid,'" confessed January.

"People want to set me up all the time and I’m like, 'No way.'"

We hear ya ?
