Let's hope 2017 will be different, but for now...

2016 has quite famously been a rubbish year.

And when it comes to parent-shaming, well, it’s also been a pretty rubbish year, mostly because we’ve seen far too much of it.

Here are some of the biggest celeb mum-shaming stories we’ve seen over the last 12 months – the ones which (especially) made us stop and go ‘whaaaat?’, and a few where the clap-back responses made us think ‘yesssss’…

Sam Faiers’ boyfriend, Victoria Beckham and Hilary Duff’s lip kisses

Both VB and singer Hilary were criticised for kissing their respective 5-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son on the lips.

Our general consensus was: sure, not everyone wants to kiss on the lips, but there’s certainly nothing wrong with it. And generally, we thought both pics were pretty sweet.

Hilary’s response was particularly pull-no-punches.

Meanwhile, Sam Faiers’ (grow-up) boyfriend Paul was criticised for giving his mum a lip-kiss on an episode of The Mummy Diaries – and Twitter was not impressed.

Stacey Solomon’s post-baby ‘saggy maggies’

We’ll admit we were pretty shocked when mum-of-2 Stacey Solomon’s bikini body was compared to 18-year-old (non-mum) Louisa Johnson’s in a British paper – and in the same piece, Stacey was shamed for having ‘sinky’ boobs.

Louisa and just about everyone else came to Stacey’s defence – but none more so than Stacey herself, who was quick to let the world know her boobs did change after having babies and that she’s pretty proud of her ‘saggy maggies’.

👏👏👏

Water safety is no laughing matter, and Sam Faiers is no stranger to parent-shaming.

But we couldn’t believe how quick people were to make unsupported assumptions over a simple holiday snap of 6-month-old Paul.

Pregnant Pink & decaf coffee

Pink pre-emptively told fans she was enjoying a decaf coffee after posting a photo of her pregnant self popping it in the microwave.

But she was quick to be shamed for drinking any kind of coffee at all during her pregnancy – something we know is totally OK in moderation.

Luckily, she had the last laugh.

Maria Fowler’s bottle-feeding and social media sharing

Former TOWIE star Maria became a mum for the first-time this year, and just days after a traumatic birth, found herself forced to defend the reason she wasn’t breastfeeding and why she wanted to keep her daughter Evie’s face off social media.

Sigh.

Hannah Polites shamed for everything

hannah polites

Not technically a celeb, but Aussie Instagram and fitness personality Hannah was the unfortunate recipient of some of the most relentless mum-shaming we’ve seen in ages.

In a selfie with her little one, the mum was attacked from all sides, with people saying she was holding her baby wrong, as well as a few made-up sins. It left us all wondering: will it ever end?

Hannah’s response was perfect: it was calm, collected, and pointedly noted that she’s actually a trained midwife.

Chrissy Teigen goes out for dinner

One of the biggest celeb-shaming stories this year saw supermodel Chrissy Teigen receive a flurry of criticism for going on a post-baby date night with husband John Legend – 10 days after their daughter Luna was born.

As we wrote at the time: hardly the crime of the century, is it?

… and Chrissy holds Luna ‘wrong’

Chrissy’s (unfortunately) been in the middle of several shaming storms this year – and the reaction to this photo of her holding Luna was one of them.

Just like the Sam Faiers boat snap, it could well have a been a case of judging a mum by one pic. Hey, babies wiggle, you know?

Chrissy’s response was particularly sharp: that’s not how you hold a baby? Well, that’s how I’m holding her!

Jools Oliver: baby-carrying, kids in the delivery room and THOSE trousers

Not only was Jools the centre of a storm surrounding how she used a front-facing baby carrier – she was also criticised for having her 14 and 13-year-old daughters with her at the birth of her 5th child, River.

After backlash, Jamie felt he needed to hit back at the controversy – saying it was simply right for them at the time.

And there was, of course, the very sensitive reaction to Jools’ post-baby body pic
