Time off for Gran?

New grandparents should be given paid leave or state benefits, according to a charity.

A poll commissioned for the charity Grandparents Plus found six out of ten people think grandparents should be paid by the state in return for childcare, and that those who work should get ‘grandparents leave.’

In the UK, it is estimated that grandparents provide £3.9billion worth of childcare each year, with three in ten grandparents being of working age.

“Parents say they’re increasingly likely to ask grandparents for help with childcare during the recession,” explains Sam Smethers from Granparents Plus. “Grandparents are playing an ever-increasing role in supporting family life and caring for children, but their contribution often goes unrecognised.”
