As the Duchess of Cambridge gets closer to her due date, bookmakers are slashing odds on the royal baby being named Alexandra.
A flurry of bets have been placed on the regal name with Ladbrokes dropping the odds from 10/1 to 2/1 in the past 24 hours.
Odds are favouring the royal baby being a girl, since Kate potentially let the news slip. Although it has also been reported that Kate is hoping for a baby boy and although footage has confirmed that she did not let the gender slip, the odds still stand at 1/3 for a girl.
Speaking about the rise in bets on the name Alexandra: “It’s the second biggest surge of bets we have witnessed since we were forced to suspend betting on the couple having a girl after Kate dropped a hint,” said a spokeswoman from Coral.
Elizabeth still remains the punters’ favorite with odds of 5-1, with Diana a close second at 6-1 and Victoria third at 7-1.
Alexandra is certainly a name with royal nouse: Princess Alexandra, 76, is a cousin of Queen Elizabeth. Also, Queen Victoria’s son Edward VII and his wife Alexandra were crowned in 1902.
Not all of the royal family have such traditional names. Some of the more contemporary monikers include Zara, Davina, Rose, Summer, and Flora.
Perhpas we will see the first Britney or Leonardo of the British royal family? Somehow, we doubt it!
Fun fact: For the most part, members of the Royal Family who are entitled to the style and dignity of HRH Prince or Princess do not need a surname, but if at any time any of them do need a surname, such as upon marriage, that surname is Mountbatten-Windsor.
