When your baby starts crawling or walking, making your home safer quickly becomes a priority. A good stair gate can help you block off stairs, doorways and other off-limits areas, but the right choice depends on where you’re fitting it, how wide the opening is and whether you want a screw-fix, pressure-fit or retractable design.

To help you find the right option for your home, we’ve tested and selected the best stair gates in a range of styles, including wooden, mesh, retractable and pressure-fit models, plus picks for awkward spaces, travel, extra-wide openings and taller children.

What to consider when buying a stair gate

Location: Think first about where the gate will go. Are you fitting it at the top or bottom of the stairs, or across a kitchen or living room doorway? Different spaces suit different gate types, so it’s worth listing every opening you want to secure before you buy.

Size: Measure carefully before choosing. Stair gates vary a lot in width and height, and what looks like a standard opening may not be as standard as you think.

Width and height: Consider both your space and your child. Some gates can be extended to suit wider openings, while taller models can be useful if your child is already pulling up or trying to climb.

Fixtures: Pressure-fit gates are usually easiest to install and move around, and they won’t damage woodwork. Hardware-fixed gates are more secure for long-term use and are the recommended choice for the top of a staircase.

Portability or travel: If you want one gate you can move around the house or take away with you, a pressure-fit or travel-friendly design is often the most practical.

Pets: If you’re also trying to manage dogs or cats in the home, think about how your pet will use the space too. Never fit a gate higher off the ground to let a pet pass underneath, as this can create a safety risk for your child.

Aesthetics: Stair gates quickly become part of your home, so style matters more than you might expect. There are wooden, mesh, metal and acrylic options if you want something that blends in better.

Opening: Features such as one-handed opening, 2-way swing, stay-open settings and auto-close functions can make everyday use much easier.

Swing or retractable: Retractable gates fold away neatly and can work well in smaller spaces. Swing gates can be either pressure-fit or hardware-mounted.

Trip hazards: Many pressure-mounted gates have a bottom bar, which can be a trip hazard. That’s why they’re generally not recommended for the top of the stairs.

How to fit a stair gate

Measure carefully: Measure the distance between the two walls or doorframes where the gate will sit, and check both the top and bottom of the opening in case the width varies. Make sure you know whether you’ll need any extensions before you buy.

Watch out for irregular gaps and skirting boards: Older homes can have uneven openings, and skirting boards can affect the fit. Use the correct spacers supplied by the manufacturer so the gate is fitted safely and evenly.

Read the manufacturer’s instructions: Every gate works differently. Some pressure-mounted models, for example, still require wall cups to be screwed in. The instructions may also say how far the gate should be installed from the stair edge.

Check the gate often: Once fitted, inspect the gate regularly to make sure it’s still secure. You may need to tighten screws or replace sticky pads over time.

How to choose a safe stair gate

The safest type of gate depends on where it will be fitted. Pressure-fit gates are convenient, especially in rented homes, but they can be unsuitable in some locations. They’re not recommended against bannisters or stair posts instead of a solid wall, and the bottom bar on many pressure-fit designs creates a trip hazard at the top of the stairs.

For the top of a staircase, a hardware-mounted gate is usually the safest choice, even though it means drilling into the wall or post. It gives a more secure fit and reduces the risk of the gate being pushed out of place. When shopping, look for the safety standard BS EN 1930:2011.

Tips on how to use a stair gate safely

Keeping a stair gate in good working order is just as important as choosing the right one in the first place. Current UK guidance says stair gates should be used as part of your wider home safety set-up, alongside close supervision, safe stair habits and regular checks that the gate is still fitted properly.

Choose the right gate for the right spot

  • Look for a gate that complies with BS EN 1930:2011, the main UK safety standard for child safety barriers and stair gates (all of the gates on our list do). In practical terms, that means the gate has been designed and tested as a child safety barrier rather than just a generic room divider or pet gate.
  • For the top of the stairs, choose a gate that fixes securely in place, often described as screw-fix or hardware-mounted.
  • For the bottom of the stairs or between rooms, a pressure-fit gate can be suitable, as long as it is installed correctly and checked regularly.
  • If you’re unsure which type you need, the NHS baby and toddler safety guidance and Trading Standards safety gate guide both offer useful advice.

At the top of the stairs, avoid trip hazards

  • At the top of a staircase, avoid a gate with a bottom bar across the floor, as this can create a trip hazard for adults.
  • Once fitted, the gate should feel secure and should not move or wobble when closed.
  • It’s worth checking fixings regularly, especially if the gate is used many times a day or your child has started pulling or pushing against it.

Use the gate properly every time

  • Always close and latch the gate properly after you walk through it, even if you’re only leaving the room for a moment.
  • Never step or climb over a stair gate, especially while carrying your baby, as this increases the risk of a fall.
  • Keep the stairs and landing area clear of toys, laundry and other clutter so you’re less likely to trip near the gate.
  • Remember that a stair gate is a safety aid, not a substitute for supervision.

Common stair gate mistakes to avoid

  • Don’t attach toys, decorations or anything hanging from the gate, as this can encourage your child to play with it or try to climb it.
  • Don’t use widening extensions unless they are specifically designed for your exact gate model.
  • Never stack one barrier above another or use more than one gate in the same opening. UK government safety guidance has specifically highlighted this as a risk.
  • Be cautious with gates bought from online marketplaces if the branding, markings or instructions seem unclear or incomplete.

Take extra care with second-hand stair gates

  • If you’re using a second-hand stair gate, check that it still meets the correct safety standard, has all its original parts and comes with fitting instructions.
  • Look for the correct markings on the gate itself, including the manufacturer or trader details and the correct width range, so you know it is being used as intended.
  • It’s also a good idea to check the UK product recalls and alerts hub or search the OPSS recalls database, particularly if you’ve bought a gate second-hand or from a marketplace seller.

When should you stop using a stair gate?

  • NHS guidance says it’s sensible to keep safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs until your child is at least 2 years old.
  • That said, age is only a guide. If your child starts trying to climb over the gate, it may no longer be the safest option.
  • At that stage, the focus should shift towards teaching your child how to use stairs safely, while still supervising them closely.

For more detailed safety advice, see the NHS, the Baby Products Association’s stair gate guidance and the Trading Standards safety gate guide.
