In a nutshell

An effective barrier cream that works well to treat nappy rash. However, the sweet scent and the presence of parabens might put some mums off.

Cons

  • Contains parabens, scent is a little sickly

Johnson’s Baby Nappy Cream is a no nonsense hypoallergenic barrier cream that helps protect against nappy rash. It’s very reasonably priced and works effectively, but won’t win any prizes for the packaging.

According to the NHS, up to a third of nappy wearing babies have nappy rash at any one time. That means that there are a lot of red bums out there that need a bit of tender loving care. The spotty, or blotchy, skin that is a sign of nappy rash is usually caused by contact with urine and faeces in a baby’s nappy. A barrier cream, like Johnson’s Baby Nappy Cream, creates a seal over the infected area allowing it to heal.

The list of ingredients in this cream is long and includes Avena Sativa Kernel Extract and Olea Europaea Leaf Extract but this cream also contains parabens (Methylparaben and Propylparaben) - preservatives put into skin care creams to give them a longer shelf life and to prevent contamination with harmful bacteria.

To use or to avoid parabens is a hotly debated subject and one that has not been resolved. However, in December 2010, Denmark was the first country in the EU to ban parabens in products for children under the age of 3.

What we love

This is a light, creamy nappy cream. The texture of this cream means that it rubs in easily and, unlike some nappy creams, it isn’t hard to shift from your hands. It’s smooth, doesn’t clump and the flip top lid means that it is hygienic to use.

What’s more, Johnson’s Baby Nappy Cream really works. In truth, I was prepared for this to be just another nappy cream but when I used it on Poppy’s 5-month-old spotty bum the rash disappeared over night. At 10pm it was there and at 7am it wasn’t! The strapline on the tube, “immediate comfort from the first use”, isn’t hype.

At £2.99 for 110g it presents true value for money.

What to watch out for

The scent is nothing to shout about – a little sweet and not particularly refreshing and the same goes for the packaging.

Johnson’s Baby Nappy Cream isn’t a cream for eco mums who shop organic.

Who is Johnson’s Baby Nappy Cream best for?

Mums on a budget who like reliable products that work first time.

MadeForMums verdict

Johnson’s Baby Nappy Cream is a fuss-free effective nappy cream that does what it says on the tin. Successful at preventing nappy rash, it offers value for money but isn’t for those avoiding parabens.
