The best creams, oils and lotions to treat eczema.

A simple, fast acting, paraben-free clear gel, which despite its unique odour treats a range of skin conditions from nappy rash to bee stings

Grandma Vine’s Natural Antiseptic Gel from Lifeplan Products is not a nappy cream; it is a paraben-free antiseptic gel made to treat skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis. But that’s not to say it can’t protect your baby’s bum.

Nappy rash is a common but potentially distressing condition that occurs when a baby’s skin comes in to contact with urine and faeces and becomes inflamed. It appears as angry red spots.

Healthy skin is slightly acidic but contact with urine and using body washes can leave the skin alkaline and therefore irritated. The active ingredient in Grandma Vine’s Natural Antiseptic Gel is cider vinegar which, when applied to the affected area neutralises the alkaline and forms a protective barrier over the rash – it’s a bit like covering it with a healing plaster.

What we love

The day that I tested Grandma Vine’s Natural Antiseptic Gel my 6-month-old daughter, Minnie, woke up with a bad case of nappy rash – pure coincidence I hope. When I squeezed the gel onto my hands they felt instantly cooler, so I hoped her angry red backside would feel the benefit. And, after a day of using the gel at every nappy change, the spots had died down.

Minnie is a wriggler and changing her nappy is a bit like wrestling a bar of soap. As a result, other nappy creams end up smeared all over her clothes. A clear gel gets around the problem; it might be there but at least you can’t see it!

A week of solid use hardly put a dent in a 50ml bottle of this gel. So, in these hard economic times this is a good bet!

What to watch out for

If you love that baby smell that wafts out of most nappy creams, this product is not for you. The smell of cider vinegar was strong and on first sniff make me reel; despite being from the West Country I have never liked cider! This was a total turn off.

The manufacturer claims that the gel will dry in minutes and whilst this may be true, most mums don’t have minutes when it comes to nappies. Minnie is rarely still, especially when I am changing her nappy, and as a result the gel was still wet when the nappy went on. And, the packing is a bit 80s and could do with a revamp.
