What we love
This gate is so easy to assemble. We opted for a fixed-on-the-wall gate for the top of our stairs and the installation tested our DIY skills (not to mention our tempers!) But when our Lindam gate arrived and I dared to unpack it on my own I was delighted to discover I could fit it completely on my own in a matter of minutes.
It’s a neutral gate which blends in with surroundings, and in the nearly 2 years we’ve been using it no child has ever yet managed to sneak onto the stairs unaccompanied. It’s easy to open if you’re an adult, can be opened both ways (so no need for backsteps). And it springs shut behind you, thankfully removing “Did I shut the gate?” panics.
What to watch out for
The only drawback when compared to wall mounted gates is the bar along the bottom of the gate which is completely fine to step over 9 times out of 10 but does manage to catch you out in the middle of the night when the lights are dimmed – and it does hurt your toes.
My son Finn has also developed a hilarious game of double locking the gate with the extra little chips at the bottom of the gate (designed to allow opening in just one direction if desired). As I walk towards the gate at speed he likes nothing better than to watch me double up over it as I release the catch only to find it still doesn’t open. This does show however that the apparently small, plastic chips are very strong! And it’s never shifted despite my full weight swinging against it.
The pressure fit is so effective that it can actually bring your wall away when you detach it. Ours stood in one spot for about a year, and when we eventually moved it, two circular pieces of paint pulled off with the side pads.
