Pros

  • Compact, soft, fits into bathroom décor

Cons

  • Handles can pinch, seem off balance

Potty training is a major milestone in any parent’s life – if not just for the amount of kitchen towel you go through in those early days! Every day is a minor victory – from the nappy to the potty, and eventually making it to the big boys’ or girls’ bathroom. But that toilet can look pretty daunting to a little bottom, which is where the training seat comes in.

The Mothercare Comfi Trainer with handles is designed to make the cavernous hole in the toilet seat look and feel less scary to your small child. With handles to steady himself (because it can feel a bit shaky when your feet don’t touch the ground!) and a comfy padded seat that’s a bit softer and warmer than the adult version, the training seat should make his transition from potty to toilet easier.

What we love

Compared to many of the multi-coloured childcare accessories, it’s nice to note that the Mothercare Comfi Trainer with handles blends in nicely with the rest of the white-wear in the smallest room of the house. It’s a small, neat solution that can stay on top of the toilet seat and is can be easily tucked down the side of the toilet even in the most confined spaces to get it out of the way.

It’s an inexpensive way of introducing the grown up toilet to your child and take away some of the fear. It gets you away from the horrors of the potty in the living room and could offer more in the way of security.

What to watch out for

The small size could also be the seat’s downfall as the handles are very tight into the seat. My son Tomos, then aged 2½, found that every time he sat on it, the handles dug into his thighs. He’s a skinny little thing so there’s not much room.

The handles were also positioned so he had to keep his hands behind him a bit, making him feel off balance. Perhaps this was a bonus because it moved us on to the big boy seat a lot faster than otherwise we might!

Who is the Mothercare Training Seat best for?

Mums with small bathrooms and small toddlers.

MadeForMums verdict

Compact, soft and blending in with the bathroom are definite upsides to the Mothercare Comfi Trainer with handles. However, it may be a little uncomfortable for some children due to the handles.
