The Stokke Tripp Trapp Highchair is something of an icon in the parenting world. Designed by Norwegian brand Stokke in 1972, it was created to bring babies right up to the dining table to help them feel included in family meals.
Unlike traditional models with fixed trays and bucket seats, this is a wooden, fully adjustable chair that can evolve with your child from the earliest days. According to the Stokke website, even an adult weighing up to 136kg can safely use it.
At £219, it sits firmly at the premium end of the highchair market, similar in price point to the Bugaboo Giraffe (£219) and the Cybex Click and Fold (£219.95) . This isn’t a short-term weaning purchase — it's designed as a long-term investment chair that can be used from babyhood through to adulthood.

Francesca Challis is a journalist and mum of two, with extensive experience reviewing baby and parenting products.
She tested the Stokke Tripp Trapp with her 6-month-old daughter (using the Baby Set), and with her nearly 3-year-old son using the chair independently during family mealtimes.

How easy is the Tripp Trapp to assemble and set up?
Assembly is straightforward, taking around 30 minutes. The instructions are largely visual, with minimal text, but they’re clear and logical. The chair itself arrives flat-packed and requires only an Allen key to put it all together (included).
The build quality is immediately obvious: solid beech wood with weight to it. Once assembled, it feels very sturdy. Attaching the Baby Set is also relatively intuitive, though aligning all the components (backrest, rail and harness) takes a little patience the first time.
Overall, it’s not too difficult, but it’s not a two-minute job either. It’s harder with a toddler around so my tip would be to wait for nap/bedtime…

How does the Newborn Set work for a baby?
My baby was already too big for the Newborn Set, so I wasn't able to test it myself. However, many parents use it to bring newborns up to table height from birth, and reviews online are very positive.
How well does the Tripp Trapp Baby Set work?
The Baby Set simply clicks onto the frame. The high back and side supports give good stability for babies who are sitting but not yet fully confident, and little legs are supported by the footrest.
The optional cushion adds an extra layer of comfort. Without it, the wooden seat is firm, though still ergonomically shaped and my 6 month old seemed perfectly comfortable without any padding.
The harness is adjustable and feels robust. Once tightened correctly, it feels secure without being restricting. The tray clicks on and off easily (once you know how) and is dishwasher safe.
Removing the Baby Set is a very simple exercise too.

Is the Tripp Trapp suitable for toddlers?
Toddlers can sit with their knees at a right angle and their feet are supported by footplate — something many traditional highchairs don’t offer.
They can also climb up independently which is fantastic for fostering autonomy and also saves your back heaving them in and out of other high chairs. It feels less like a ‘baby chair’ and more like a proper seat at the table.
Is the Tripp Trapp practical for everyday life?
In terms of everyday life, the Tripp Trapp has slotted in seamlessly. The footprint is relatively compact front-to-back but it is solid and doesn’t fold. So it’s very much a permanent fixture around the family dining table.

How easy is it to adjust as your children grow?
You can’t instantly adjust the highchair. The seat and footplates need to be removed and repositioned in the appropriate grooves on the frame. But once you know how it should only take a few minutes and an Allen key.
It’s not something you would do daily, so for periodic growth adjustments it’s manageable. Online parenting forums often mention this as a drawback — and I agree it’s not instant — but it's unlikely to be a dealbreaker.
Is the Stokke Tripp Trapp easy to clean?
The tray wipes clean easily and is dishwasher-safe. The cushion is machine washable (a must with weaning mess).
The wooden frame wipes down easily, though food can occasionally get into crevices where the seat meets the frame. A quick wipe after meals keeps this manageable.
How well made is the Stokke Tripp Trapp?
Exceptionally well made. The solid wood construction feels premium and durable. Even with an energetic toddler climbing up and down, it doesn’t wobble.
Some parents online mention using theirs for 5–10 years or passing them between siblings. I can absolutely see this lasting through multiple children.

If you’ve used other highchairs, how does it compare?
We previously used a more traditional plastic highchair with a large tray. While convenient in the short term, it felt bulky and less visually appealing compared to the Tripp Trapp. In terms of longevity and adaptability, it’s in a completely different league.
What’s in the box?

- Assembly tools and instructions
Optional accessories (sold separately):

- 5-point harness

How sustainable is the Stokke Tripp Trapp?
This is where the Tripp Trapp outshines its counterparts the most. For environmentally conscious families, buying one chair that will last for years rather than multiple short-term highchairs is a very compelling factor. Many families also resell them easily, which extends lifespan further.
Is the Stokke Tripp Trapp worth the money?
There’s no escaping the cost. By the time you add the Newborn Set, Baby Set, tray and cushion, the price tag is significant.
It’s best suited to families who prioritise long-term investment over short-term savings, value long-term usability and sleek design, and perhaps plan on having multiple children.
Families preferring a budget-friendly, short-term weaning solution might opt for something simpler.

Where can I buy the Stokke Tripp Trapp?
It is available from John Lewis, Stokke, Amazon, Natural Baby Shower, Pramworld

MadeForMums verdict:
The Stokke Tripp Trapp Highchair is beautifully designed, durable and clearly great quality. It truly grows with your child and will last for many years of family mealtimes.
While the upfront investment is quite high and adjustments require a little fiddling around with an Allen key, for families seeking longevity, style and inclusion at the table, it’s a standout choice and one I would confidently recommend.
