  • Processing power and performance when it comes to gaming

Fed up with having to give up the family computer due to urgent homework needs? Is the iPad always mysteriously missing - until it's run out of charge? How easy was it to set up?

The set-up was very simple and the system guides you through every step. It will set you up with a Microsoft account if you didn’t have one already, which I have found to be very helpful. Both Windows 10 and Microsoft Office (Mobile) are pre-installed.

How easy is it to use?

The keyboard is pretty standard and easy to use. For me, the touchpad took a bit more getting used to but it has a variety of useful tricks that make the experience of the laptop much more flexible.

The fact that you can also use it as a touchscreen works really well. It makes certain tasks like scrolling much easier. And it's great that you can use it in the touchscreen mode while the keyboard is attached - very neat.

Does the Wi-Fi work OK?

Yes, the Wi-Fi works fine and is very easy to set up - we had no problems with accessing the internet.

What is it like for homework?

This is one of the BravoWin's real strengths. It's so portable, you can do your homework anywhere. It also comes with Microsoft Office Mobile pre-installed, and both Word and PowerPoint applications worked well for homework assignments. Research is also easy with fast internet.

Can you play Minecraft and other games on it?

Let's face it, it's not a gaming computer and given its price, why would it be. I wouldn’t recommend this laptop for gaming purposes as any slightly demanding game will be difficult to run. I tried to play Minecraft but it was not a very smooth experience. It was also very hard to play with only the touchpad, so you'd need to invest in a mouse.

How is it with YouTube and streaming movies?

Great. I found the laptop performed really well when streaming YouTube videos and movies. Using it as a tablet helps the viewing experience as the keyboard sometimes gets in the way.

How is it with social?

The laptop works well with all social media platforms, especially Facebook. It's a Windows tablet, so you can't download Facebook apps, but it works well via the internet. Again, I think it is easier to use the laptop in tablet mode for this purpose.

How portable and robust does it feel?

It's very portable - I found myself carrying it around everywhere. It weighs 1080g with the keyboard (and 600g without). That's more than 400g lighter than the Asus 10-inch hybrid, despite its chunky feel.
And it's the chunkiness that makes it's so robust. The Venturer BravoWin did brilliantly in a drop test (as did its larger cousin the EliteWin). The laptop was dropped from two heights: 0.7m (roughly table height) and 1.2m (roughly dropping from standing). The other laptops tested were the Surface 3, Lenovo and Asus hybrids and the Venturers were the only two laptops to survive the 1.2m drop (they’re dropped on at least 6 different sides and corners, not just one). That’s impressive.

How stylish is it?

It's not the most stylish laptop on the market but the simplistic design is quite aesthetically pleasing. While I tested the silver and black version, there's also an all-silver, metallic black and a gold silver version.

How long do the batteries last?

Although the battery life is 8 hours, we found the battery lasted us about 4 hours of constant use, depending on what tasks you are performing at that time. It also has a ‘battery saver’ mode which can increase battery time.

Are the cameras OK?

Both the front and rear facing cameras work fine but are not the best quality. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone expecting to take high-quality photos but it's fine for social.

Who is this laptop/tablet best for?

This is a great laptop hybrid for school kids who need a reliable device to complete homework and also to relax. It's flexible and powerful enough to do your work, stream movies or go on social media.

MadeForMums verdict

Simple to use, a budget buy and built to withstand school life - this is a great choice for your child's personal computer and tablet in one.
