Sure Start Centres at risk of closure

Family support centres under threat as reports suggest closures within a year

Around 250 Sure Start Children’s Centres for children are at risk of closing within the next year, due to cuts by local authorities, a new survey has suggested.

It’s estimated that 60,000 families will be affected by the 250 closures, and staff at 1,000 centres will be at risk of redundancy. A further 2,000 centres will be cutting services.

The survey of local authority managers by the charities 4Children and the Daycare Trust has found a massive amount of children’s centres across the country could close when they lose their funding this year.

Sure Start centres, an initiative set up by Tony Blair, are designed to offer numerous services under one roof including playgroups and parenting lessons.

What does this mean to you? Have you and your little ones been using your local Sure Centre centre and would you miss it if it closes? Let us know….
