You might think that mum-of-6 Angelina Jolie always dreamed of having a big family. But actually, the 40-year-old has admitted she never saw herself having children – until she visited Cambodia.
It wasn’t until she was 25 when she visited the southeast Asian country to film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2001 that she felt her first pang of maternal instinct.
“It’s strange, I never wanted to have a baby. I never wanted to be pregnant. I never babysat. I never thought of myself as a mother,” Angelina told the Associated Press.
But after playing with children at a Cambodian school, Ange felt that she was destined to adopt a boy from the country.
“It was suddenly very clear to me that my son was in the country, somewhere,” she said.
This intuition guided her and in 2002 she adopted Maddox, now 14. Although she was married to fellow actor Billy Bob Thornton at the time and they announced the adoption news together, Angelina formally adopted Maddox as a single parent and the couple split just three months after the adoption was finalised.
Angelina now has five other children with husband Brad Pitt: Pax, 12, Zahara, 10, Shiloh, 9, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 7.
