Back to school spending hits £709 million
Survey unveils the cost of kitting out our children for the new school year

Us parents will spend an average of £122 to kit out our children out ready for the new school year, a new survey has revealed.
Insurance group LV= asked 2,013 adults what they would be spending on their children as the new school year fast approaches.
The results reveal we’re set to spend, on average, £122 per child on back to school essentials, like school uniform and stationary, with younger infants getting gear worth £96 ready for the new term.
And it doesn’t stop there. If you thought the credit crunch and tight budget would have us tightening our belts, think again. Over half of parents asked reckoned they were ready to spend more on their children this school year than last.
So how much do school essentials cost? According to the survey, here’s the average cost of items….
School uniform £50
Stationary £10
Sports kit £40
Haircut for child 310
School bag £12
Winter coat £20
Lunchbox £6
School books £20
