Drew Barrymore: “Working mums can’t have it all”

Actress gives up film-making career to focus on bringing up daughter Olive

She may be a highly acclaimed Hollywood actress, director and successful business owner  – but Drew Barrymore believes as a mum you can’t have it all.

The star, who gave birth to her and husband Will Kopelman’s first child Olive last year, opened up for the first time about the difficulties of juggling her family and career.

“You know that you’re going to miss out on your child’s upbringing or you realise that your relationship is going to suffer if you work night and day and weekends,” said Drew, reports Lucky magazine.

“Unfortunately I was raised in this generation of like, women can have it all, and I don’t think you can. I think some things fall off the table,” she adds.

But for the new mum giving up her biggest passion, directing, was nothing to the thought of not having a strong bond with her daughter.

“The good news is what does stay on the table becomes much more important,” Drew adds.

“You’ve got to choose your battles, definitely. I would miss out on my daughter if I continued to direct films. It was heart breaking to let go, but it was a clear choice. As my daughter gets older, I’ll slowly get back into it.”

Drew isn’t the only A-lister to feel the pressure of being in the limelight, as both David Beckham and Gwyneth Paltrow have admitted their careers can put a strain on family life.
