Lego movie coming in 2014

The much-loved building bricks are set to star in of one of Hollywood’s most hotly anticipated movies

Hollywood has been raiding children’s toy boxes for inspiration since Toy Story proved a box office hit in 1996. Action figures such as Transformers and G.I. Joe have made obvious choices for big screen heros. But the latest toy to be given the star treatment is rather more unassuming – the humble Lego brick.

Warner Bros has just given the green light to a CGI/live action Lego feature film that is expected to be released in 2014.

It certainly won’t be short of an avid audience – more than 100million children play with Lego, and there are 55,000 registered Adult Fans of Lego (AFOLs) worldwide.

The film will be written and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who previously worked on Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, and co-directed by Chris McKay, director of Robot Chicken.

Australian animators Animal Logic, who worked on the Oscar-winning Happy Feet and its forthcoming sequel, are also on board with the project.

The yet-to-be-named movie has been billed as a family-oriented flick that will embrace Lego’s key values of fun, creativity and boundless imagination.

Little has been given away about the plot, but Phil Lord recently revealed that the movie is set in a land made of Lego, where everything from water to explosions will be crafted from the bricks. He also mentioned that scenes from other movie franchises including Harry Potter and Indiana Jones could be included, subject to rights.

MFM has high hopes for the film, as from little bricks can great stories grow. Part of Lego’s timeless appeal (it has twice been named Toy of the Century and today, seven sets are sold per second), is down to its limitlessness – you can build almost anything you can imagine. So we look forward to seeing what the minds of Lord and Miller have in store for us.
