Local community’s fundraising sees 5-year-old able to stand on her own

Surgery in the USA funded by local donations helps 5-year-old Ella, who suffers with cerebral palsy

Ella Gilbert, 5, suffers from cerebral palsy but can now stand without her frame thanks to surgery in USA. The local community got behind Ella’s parents’ Ella’s Wish campaign and helped raise £50,000 by holding coffee mornings, dinner dances and sponsored walks.

Having been told the waiting list in the UK was extremely long, mum Caroline and dad Chris, were thankfully able to take Ella to Missouri to have the two operations she needed because of the money raised.

Caroline says Ella stood alone for three seconds and as dad Chris explained, she can now put all of her weight on her legs. This is a huge improvement compared to last Christmas, where Ella needed Botox injections to ease the pain.

Dad Chris, a management consultant, told the Metro that without the operations, which included cutting Ella’s spinal nerves and lengthening her hamstrings and Achilles tendons, she would have been in a wheelchair for life. He’s keen for more NHS hospitals to offer patients this life changing procedure.
