Mothercare has announced it will be closing nearly a third of all its shops over the next two years.

Instead, the store that sells a range of baby gear from buggies to bibs and clothes to children’s toys, will concentrate on its out-of-town bigger stores.

Hit by the difficult financial climate, bad weather before Christmas and increasing numbers of parents buying baby gear in supermarkets and online, Mothercare’s profits fell in 2010.

However, Mothercare is doing well abroad. It’s enjoyed a record year with sales up by 16% and it is soon to open outlets in Latin America for the first time.

There are now 11 Mothercare stores in China, and 62 in India. It’s planned to have 200 stores in India by 2015.

Mothercare, which also owns Early Learning Centre, is now changing the design of its UK stores and may also be looking at its pricing strategy too.

At the moment, Mothercare is offering £20 off for every £100 you spend. Watch out for some more Mothercare deals which may be on their way – we’ll keep you posted…
