Photographer Maegan Dougherty captured the moment a mum breastfed her toddler – while she was in labour.
The sweet image shows mum breastfeeding – while dad says something to his little girl, and grandma looks on with a beaming smile on her face.
Maegan wrote alongside the snap on Instagram:
“I love this moment. Big sister was so happy to see her mom and to nurse. And then contractions got longer and more intense.”
It might not seem that unusual, really – how many pics have we all seen of breastfeeding on social media?
But we thought it was really interesting that it was all happening during the birth of her 2nd child.
Because it’s been written that breastfeeding can actually help to speed up the labour process – as the baby’s suckling can release the hormone oxytocin, which stimulates the uterus to contract.
(The same effect can also be mimicked by massaging the entire area of the areola for about 15 minutes – and repeating frequently.)
Maegan spoke to the Daily Mail about the experience of shooting her viral photo:
“Grandma brought big sister to the hospital to spend time with her mum while she was labouring.
“The mum knew her daughter would want to nurse, and she also knew that that may help the labour process.
“Her daughter asked to nurse as soon as she got there, and she said yes. Her baby was born two hours after her daughter nursed. So it seemed to move things along.”
What a truly amazing photo ❤️
