A 7-year-old boy has raised over £100,000 for survivors of the Haiti earthquake by doing a sponsored bike ride.
Charlie Simpson, from London, hoped to raise £500 cycling around his local park in Fulham. In just one day, he’d already collected £50,000, and the total is still rising.
“I just thought it was quite sad when I saw pictures on the TV,” said Charlie.
His mum, Leonora, helped him make a sponsorship form, which circulated on the internet and inspired hundreds of people to donate through Charlie’s JustGiving webpage.
“He felt really strongly about this and thought that something had to be done,” Charlie’s mum said. “But what started off as a little cycle round the park with his dad has turned into something a lot bigger than that and we can’t believe it.”
Donations from Charlie’s JustGiving page will go to UNICEF, which is leading emergency relief efforts to provide water, sanitation, education, nutrition and child protection.
