Parents will now be able to look after each other’s children without fear of being prosecuted.
Schools Secretary Ed Balls ordered Ofsted inspectors to stop pursuing parents who share childcare among friends. This decision comes after two working mums were branded illegal childminders last month and banned from sharing childcare unless they are registered with Ofsted.
The Schools Minister said childcare arrangements between friends “should not be a matter for regulation” and wrote to Ofsted chief Christine Gilbert asking her to inform inspectors that parents should be “free from interference”.
Mums and dads who receive payment for regularly looking after each other’s children will still need to register as childminders.
