Shock as second nun gives birth to surprise baby
Nun with stomach pains ends up with an unexpected baby - the second time this has happened in Italy in a year
A nun has startled her Italian convent by giving birth to a baby boy. The nun says she had no idea she was pregnant, and gave birth to the surprise baby after suffering from stomach pains.
The nun was originally from South America but last summer joined the Missionary Sisters of the Love of Christ in Macerata, in the Italian region of Le Marche. After complaining of stomach pains, her sisters took her to hospital – where doctors quickly diagnosed her pains as labour pains, according to Italian newspaper Il Corriere Adriatico.
It's now believed the nun was already pregnant when she joined the convent in June last year. According to the Italian newspaper L’Unione Sarda, the convent said the woman "is not a nun, is a girl that we are helping” possibly because she had not yet taken her vows.
The baby is healthy and the nun's convent has reportedly expressed an interest in taking care of him.
This comes almost exactly a year after a different nun in Italy experienced tummy ache and ended up giving birth. Last January, a Salvadorean nun in Italy unexpectedly gave birth and described her surprise child as a "gift from God".
