How did Sophie Ellis-Bextor meet husband Richard?

We don’t know much about their first meeting, but it’s been reported that Sophie and Richard met in 2002.

Apparently The Feeling bassist Richard first met popstar Sophie while she was touring her album Read My Lips.

More like this

Fortunately, both Sophie and Richard seemed keen on a big family. The couple were even told by separate fortune tellers that Richard would have 3 children, and Sophie would have 2…

Which seems like quite some clever foresight to us – just keep reading to see why!

Sophie’s 1st pregnancy

In 2003, then 24-year-old Sophie was pregnant with the couple’s 1st child. Apparently, she and Richard were weeks into a ‘whirlwind’ romance when she conceived. (So reports say, anyway!)

Here’s Sophie with her 1st baby bump, though unfortunately she’s since said she didn’t feel great during this pregnancy:

“I wasn’t feeling great,” she reflects. “I had headaches and didn’t feel quite right but I didn’t know what was wrong.”

At 31/32 weeks into her pregnancy, she was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia.

Sonny Jones

On 23 April 2014, Sophie and Richard’s first child was born. They had a baby boy, who they named Sonny – the eldest boy among many boys.

Sonny was born via C-section, prematurely at 32 weeks, and weighed 3lb 8oz at birth. He spent the first few weeks of his life in the neonatal intensive care unit.

“I was diagnosed [with pre-eclampsia] on the Monday and had Sonny on the Friday – it was all a bit of a shock,” Sophie’s since said in interviews.

Fortunately, Sonny's now a healthy and happy teenager!

Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s wedding

Sophie and Richard married in 2005, reportedly their wedding took place in Italy.

We don’t know much about their private nuptials, but we can imagine it was a lovely occasion. We do wonder how involved then-baby Sonny was in the ceremony, if at all?

We don’t have any pics from their special day to share, but we did find this one of Sophie and Richard in wedding garb – from a celebration of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding in 2011!

Sophie’s 2nd pregnancy

In 2008, Sophie became pregnant with the couple’s 2nd child.

There aren’t many pics around of Sophie’s bump from that time – but here she is at a make-up product launch showing the tiniest hint of pregnancy.

Once again, she suffered with pre-eclampsia throughout her pregnancy.

Kit Jones

On 7 February 2009, Sophie and Richard’s 2nd son, Kit, was born.

He was born 9 weeks earlier than expected, weighing a tiny 2lb 10oz at birth. He remained in hospital for 6 weeks.

Kit was born with his lungs partially collapsed. He had to be given artificial respiration.

Sophie was spotted taking Kit out in a Maxi-Cosi car seat and Bugaboo travel system, when he was 12 weeks old.

Fortunately, both Kit and Sonny are now healthy boys. Sophie’s since said that by 2.5 years old, you’d have never known either boys were preemie babies.

Sophie’s 3rd pregnancy

In 2011, Sophie found out she was expecting her 3rd child.

Very happily, Sophie revealed her 3rd pregnancy was ‘lovely’ and that she did not suffer the same pre-eclampsia she had with Sonny and Kit.

Ray Jones

On 25 April 2012, the Ellis-Bextor Joneses became a family of 5, as 33-year-old Sophie gave birth to the couple’s 3rd son.

“It’s a boy! Ray Holiday Jones was born today at 12:35 weighing 7lb 15. Mother and baby doing great. We are truly smitten. Love to u all. Rx,” new dad Rich tweeted.

Sophie’s 4th pregnancy

In May 2015, the news was revealed: Sophie Ellis-Bextor was pregnant with her 4th child!

The star stepped out with her 4th bump in October 2015, looking radiant on a red carpet at around 8 months pregnant.

She totally wow-ed us with how she styled her bump in different ways during her pregnancy.

Jesse Jones

On 3 November 2015, Sophie and Richard’s brood grew to 4, as Sophie gave birth to another boy, named Jesse.

She announced the birth with a sweet snap on social media – read the announcement here.

Sophie’s a keen Instagrammer, and we’ve seen some gorgeous family snaps of red-haired Jesse from baby to toddler and beyond.

So very kind of her to share such lovely moments with fans.

Sophie’s 5th pregnancy

Singer Sophie’s army of fans were expecting a new album – but instead, they got an album and pregnancy announcement!

She dropped the news casually in a radio chat with DJ Chris Evans, calling herself 'mental' for having her 5th baby and releasing a new album at the same time.

Sophie soon found a lot of people thought she'd be desperate to have a little girl, after the pregnancy announcement - and she took out some of her frustration on Instagram, writing:

"I am lucky enough to be expecting my fifth baby. I am fortunate to have four happy healthy kids already who happen to all be boys.

"Sometimes I have folk say well-intentioned but truly ridiculous things to me about having the same gender...

"Of course, all I am hoping is my new baby is happy and healthy too so I’m trying to come up with a good retort to these daft comments.

"Best I’ve got so far is ‘oh no, we’re trying for a boy of course!’. Anyhoo I’m sure my kids know I’ve never wanted any of them to be anyone other than who they are, willy or no willy. X"

Mickey Jones

Sophie gave birth to her 5th boy, named Mickey, on 7 January 2019. She announced his arrival with a sweet Instagram pic.

“He’s here! Mickey Jones born today weighing 7lb 1oz and he’s absolutely gorgeous. Welcome to our quirky little family, sweet boy. We’re so glad you’re here safe. Xxxxxxxxxxxx” she wrote, alongside the snap of Richard holding his newborn son.

We couldn’t be happier for this lovely family of 7, and we have so enjoyed these gorge snaps on the new arrival...
