Isn’t it just the cutest thing that kids just say and do what they think, and do not see boundaries or restrictions in social situations like us silly buttoned-up grown ups do?
Well one mum has shared the story of how her little girl made friends with an OAP after randomly meeting him in the supermarket on her birthday – and how it has ended up changing both their lives.
Writing on her Facebook page, Tara Wood told how she had stopped off at the grocery store to buy cupcakes for her daughter Norah’s 4th birthday when the little girl singled out an old man for a chat – before asking if she could have her pic taken with him ‘for her birthday’.
It didn’t end there.
Tara’s post attracted so many likes and shares, that TV stations and papers across America picked up on it, and all the coverage led to the man – 82-year-old ‘Mr Dan’ – being contacted and eventually going over to Norah’s house for a party!
They then found out that he had recently lost his wife and was pretty lonely. Now, they go visit him once a week and a real friendship has blossomed between him and Norah and her family.
Just how lovely?
We’ll let Norah’s mum explain how the whole scenario began:
“We made a quick stop at the grocery store to pick up cupcakes for Norah’s birthday,” Tara wrote on Facebook.
“She was sitting in one of those carts that look like a car or truck or whatever when an older gentleman walked by. We’d passed several other elderly customers but she seemed magnetically drawn to this man.
“Her face lit up like the sun, she waved excitedly, and said “Hi old person! It’s my birfday today!”
“He was furrow-browed but his expression softened when he realised she was speaking to him.
“Well hello little lady! And how old are you today?” he asked. They chatted for a few seconds and it was super adorable.
“We said ‘goodbye’ and carried on shopping.
“A few minutes later she turned and asked “Can I take a picture with the old man for my birfday?”
“Uh, it was the cutest damn thing ever. I knew he couldn’t have gone very far so we backtracked until we found him.
“Excuse me, sir? She’d like to know if you’d take a photo with her for her birthday?” I asked.
“He looked confused and then stunned and then delighted.
“A photo? With me?” he asked.
“Yes suh! For my birfday!” Norah exclaimed.
“And so they posed together and then they hugged each other like they were long lost friends.
“We thanked ‘Mr. Dan’ for taking time to spend a few minutes of his day with us.
“He teared up and said “No, thank YOU. This has been the best day I’ve had in a long time. You’ve made me so happy, Ms. Norah.”
“Sometimes talking to strangers turns into the most beauty full thing in the world.”
Awww, we totally agree (obvs within all the guidelines that we drum into our kids about talking to strangers) – but it is just so nice when people like ‘Mr Dan’ make the effort to indulge our little ones in odd ways, right?
What a star he is!
