What’s the world’s most popular name?

Jack might have topped the UK’s list, but there is one name which is the a worldwide favourite…

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed last week that the nation’s favourite name for a boy was Jack. The world’s favourite however is Mohammed with an estimated 15 million people sharing his name worldwide.

Mohammed is also the most popular boy’s name in London, West Midlands, Yorkshire and the North West.

Mohammed has been officially crowned the most popular name for baby boys in the world, with an estimated 15 million people with the name worldwide.

Other European capitals also favour Mohammed, with the name ranking number one in Brussels, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Oslo.

In recent years, the ONS has refused to break down the popular names according to regions, so it’s believed that Mohammed could have been the most popular choice for a number of years.

Why Mohammed? Originating from Islam, the meaning of the name is ‘the praised one’ and is particularly favoured in Muslim communities. Its popularity may have grown due the many variants in its spelling, like Muhammed, Mohammad, Mohamed and Muhammed.
