We all did/do this, right? Tip-toeing around our sleeping bubbas, tersely pressing our fingers to our lips and hissing SHHHHHH if anyone so much as BREATHED loudly once they’d gone to sleep, and generally undertaking a vow of silence until they wake again.
It’s just what you do when kids finally drift off into the land of nod, isn’t it?
Well, one woman who is now living to regret her oh-so-quiet brand of early years parenting is fashion designer-stroke-TV-personality (and daughter of Lionel), Nicole Richie.
In fact, Nicole reckons that not exposing her daughter Harlow, 8, and son Sparrow, 7, to noise when they were little has left them unable to sleep through any now.
And if you think about it, it makes some sense, doesn’t it?
Nicole was talking all things motherhood to People magazine online, and made her revelation when asked what she might have done differently looking back.
“I was very quiet around my kids when they were babies and now they’re light sleepers,” she said. “So I wish that I had been a little more rough with them.”
The working mum was quick to point out though that parenting really is different strokes for different folks, and there is deffo no one-size-fits-all approach.
“There’s not one way to raise children,” she said. “There’s not one way to be a mother. It really depends on your house and your lifestyle.”
And the Richie house and lifestyle certainly seems to be one full of love and laughter.
“Oh my God, they make me laugh every day,” the proud mum said.
“They make me laugh all the time. I’m always finding [funny] pictures on my phone of them that they take, and videos that they take.”
Sensible and fun mama, eh?
