Whether your child is 10 months old or 10 years, a cool, soothing ice lolly is the perfect antidote to a hot summerhat could be’s day. And w better than a home-made option? Depending on the age of your little ones, you can fill them with a mixture of fruit, yoghurt, breast or coconut milk and even vegetable puree or juice. Either way, they’re bound to go down a treat.

1. NUK Mini Ice Lolly Set, £3.74

Dishwasher safe: Yes

Made from: Plastic

Created in conjunction with baby-weaning guru Annabel Karmel, these mini ice lolly moulds are perfect for babies and toddlers from nine months old who don’t need a big popsicle to keep them happy. They feature easy-hold handles perfect for little hands (and especially good for younger babies who are teething), and a handy drip collector which reduces mess.

A big bonus is that the four moulds unclip from each other with their stands, meaning you can just freeze one or two if necessary (as long as you are able to wedge them into your freezer upright so the mixture doesn’t spill). Beware though – some reviewers have found the connectors between each one can break easily when frozen, so be gentle when unclipping them. You might also find your baby can’t get to the very end of the lolly because of the long stick – which may be frustrating for some. At just £3.74, they’re a real bargain, though.

2. Nuby Garden Fresh Fruitsicles Frozen Purees Moulds, £5.75

Dishwasher safe: Yes

Made from: Plastic

These neat little ice lolly moulds are similar to those from NUK in that they have easy-to-hold handles and a useful drip catcher. Nuby say these are suitable for babies from 6 months (while the NUK ones are recommended for those aged 9 months and over) and they’re ideal if you’re hoping to create breast milk popsicles for your teething baby.

They can be a bit tricky to remove once frozen, but simply run the mould under warm water, or give them a good wiggle and twist, and they should come out.

The tray is strong and durable but doesn’t come apart like the NUK moulds, meaning it is quite big and cumbersome to place in your freezer.

We love the different brightly coloured handles, which can be a useful pointer if you’ve used the moulds for different fillings.

Available from: Amazon and Nuby

3. Bonnie the Bunny Ice Lolly Mould, £4.95

Dishwasher safe: No

Made from: Plastic

Your kids are bound to love these cute bunny ice lollies. With easy-to-hold rabbit ear handles, they’re suitable for children young and old.

They make 6 lollies (unlike NUK and Nuby which both only offer four), which is good if you have a few children round.

The base is sturdy and the lollies are a decent size at around 6cm high. Unfortunately, these moulds aren’t dishwasher-safe, although they’re fairly easy to clean in the sink. These moulds would make a brilliant present, and, at £4.95, they’re a reasonable price.

Available from: Rex London

4. Zoku Fish Ice Lolly Pop Moulds, £19.99

Dishwasher safe: No

Made from: Silicone and plastic

If you like your ice lollies with a side of under-the-sea fun, these moulds are a must-buy. Youngsters will love deciding if they want to eat the shark, puffer fish or scuba diver-shaped lolly and the surprise ‘skeleton’ sticks are a thoughtful addition. And why not mix and match the tails with the base to create funny combinations?

Usefully, the lollies have drip guards to minimise waste and you can make six lollies at a time which is a good number if you’re entertaining playdate guests. The unit is fairly bulky, though, so you will need to clear some space in the freezer.

These are recommended for use from the age of 3 and they do create a sizeable lolly.

One thing worth bearing in mind is that you don’t ‘pull’ the lolly out of the mould like usual, instead, the popsicles are easier to remove if you peel the silicone off from around them.

Available from: Amazon, Kidly and John Lewis

5. Tovolo Rocket Ice Pop Moulds, £12.99

Dishwasher safe: Yes

Made from: Plastic

If you hanker after the lollies from your childhood, these rocket-shaped moulds are sure to give you a blast from the past. With their fun design, they look brilliant in bright colours – especially when layered – and kids will love experimenting with different ingredients.

Holding 2.5 fluid ounces, they’re suitable for a wide age range and parents will be pleased to hear the drip-guard handle helps keep hands clean.

The product comes with a rack, which does take up a lot of space in the freezer, but each mould can be removed individually (like the NUK moulds) – meaning you can wedge them in between items if you’re short on space. The fact one can be taken out alone means it’s easy to remove your frozen creation using hot water, too.

Available from: Amazon

6. Lakeland Lick and Sip Reusable Ice Lolly Maker, £4.29

Dishwasher safe: Yes

Made from: Plastic

A good budget option, this lolly maker doesn’t create popsicles in fancy shapes, like the Bonnie the Bunny or Zoku Fish Ice Moulds, but your kids will still love them.

They’re best suited for older children as they produce fairly decent-sized lollies (at 8cm in height).

They come with a handy base which catches melted juices and – unlike the other products mentioned here – there’s also a useful straw which lets your youngsters slurp them up, meaning minimal waste.

Available from: Lakeland

7. Sunnylife Icy Pole Moulds, £18

Dishwasher safe: Yes

Made from: Silicone

These fun and funky silicone moulds will bring a pop of colour to your sunny afternoon, and your kids will love slurping all the leftover juices once they’ve finished.

The best thing about these moulds is that, unlike all the others mentioned here, you can lay them on their side in your freezer and fit them in even the tiniest of spaces, as the lids really are drip-proof.

Because they create popsicles that are shaped more like Calippos, rather than your traditional lolly-on-a-stick, these are better suited for older children and not babies or young toddlers (in fact, Sunnylife says they’re ideal for children aged 12 and over, although we’re sure that kids under that age will love them, too). You might even be tempted to roll them out for the adults as well!

Available from: Amazon, Kidly and Sunnylife

8. Zoku Single Quick Pop Maker Plus, £24.99

Dishwasher safe: No

Made from: Plastic

If sunny days often take you by surprise and you never seem to remember to pre-make ice lollies, this fancy gadget could be for you. The Zoku Single Quick Pop Maker produces ice lollies in minutes and doesn’t need electricity.

Store the compact base in your freezer and then simply get it out, fill the mould and add one of the reusable lolly sticks. Wait 7-9 minutes, and hey presto! It can make up to 3 lollies before the base needs refreezing. It comes with 3 reusable lolly sticks and drip guards and is ideal for kids who like to be involved in making ice lollies, but lose interest before they’re frozen.

It is expensive – and certainly much more than all the other offerings mentioned here – but if you’re a sucker for convenience or have a very full freezer, it’s a great idea.

Available from: Amazon and Lakeland

9. Kidsme Icy Moo Moo Teether, £5

Dishwasher safe: Yes

Made from: Silicone

If you’re looking for a product specifically designed to help soothe sore gums and help with teething, you can call off the search. The Kidsme Icy Moo Moo Teether (the name of which is quite a mouthful!) is just that.

A teether and icy lolly mould in one, it can be used as a traditional teether when your baby is 3 months old and an ice lolly mould from 9 months.

It’s a good two-in-one product that’s ideal for younger babies (as the cap doesn’t hold a great deal of liquid), is easy to hold and nice and light, too.

Just bear in mind that if you are simply looking for an ice lolly mould, you could buy a pack of four from the likes of Nuby or Nuk for the same price as this single one.

Available from: Amazon, JoJo Maman Bebe and Kidly

10. Zoku Slow Mini Pops, £16.99

Dishwasher safe: No

Made from: Silicone

Another one from ice-lolly kings Zoku, this silicone mould is brilliant for toddlers and is a must-buy if you’re hosting a kids’ party in the summer. It creates 9 lollies at a time – substantially more than the others on this list – and, because the mould is made from silicone, the lollies are super easy to remove.

It also boasts a really sturdy design, which prevents leaks in the freezer.
The only downside is the spherical design means you can’t create layered lollies (like with the Tovolo rocket-shaped moulds) and you do need a fair amount of space in your freezer.
