In case you haven’t heard (where have you BEEN?), it’s all about unicorns right now 🦄 🦄 🦄 🦄 Big unicorns, small unicorns, cute unicorns, not-so-cute unicorns, grooming unicorns, flying unicorns…
And we’ve trawled the shelves to find the very best – all of them super-magical, natch.
Here’s our pick of the best unicorn toys…
What it is: A 22.9cm wide x 40cm tall, stand-up unicorn whose horn lights up and whose eye make-up changes with the wave of a wand. Comes with 5 glam accessories including a butterfly, a make-up wand and a magic microphone. Need 4 AA batteries for the magic work, included.
Why we love it: Myla’s got a really interesting concept behind her: your child uses their wand to choose a colour, and puts it on her light-up horn, her wings or her eyelids, and watches as it changes colour!
Seems pretty magical to a little one with a love for unicorns. Even us grown-ups found it pretty amazing, which is why we awarded it Gold in our Best Interactive Toy category at the 2018 MadeForMums Toy Awards.
Available from: Smyths Toys (for £39.99)
Age: 12 months+ (with adult supervision).
What it is: A blow-up space hopper with a unicorn theme. Your little one simply holds on to the ears and bounces away.
Why we love it: Kids have been having fun on hoppers for decades, and this one is just the right size for 1 to 3 year olds. It can be little tricky to get the lid onto the blow-up vent without letting a little more air out than you’d like (there’s no valve) but it’s definitely a quality toy for the price.
Available at: Amazon and Argos
Age: 3 to 6 years
What it is: A large (28cm) cuddly creature with a unicorn and tufty rainbow hair. It comes in a brightly coloured egg and has sequin heart on its chest which reveals a secret message when swiped.
Each Rainbocorn comes with a surprise Booboocorn: a miniature collectable baby Rainbocorn hidden inside another secret egg. There are 12 Rainbocorns to collect and unhatch.
Why we love it: Well, this is a soft toy that combines unicorns, unhatching, secret messages, surprises and collecting – what more could a little one want? It’s certainly thrilling.
Kids love all the details and little extras: from the sequin heart (that can be removed) to the ‘hidden message’ that changes when your child strokes their Rainbocorn. And parents like that Rainbocorn has a sturdy shell to keep the toy stored away.
Rainbocorn won silver in the Best Soft Toy category at the 2018 MadeForMums Toy Awards.
Available at: Amazon, Argos and Smyths Toys
What it is: This very special interactive unicorn has posable legs, a tiara and a light-up horn. When you press the special star button on her hoof, she paws the floor, moves her hand, flutters her wings and tells a story, talks about magic spells or says 1 of over 90 special phrases. Needs 4 1.5V batteries (not included)
Why we love it: If you’re looking for a unicorn with WOW factor, this is it. She’s pricey, that’s for sure, but she’s a definite show-stopper. And her mane and tail are just right for all manner of brushing and styling.
Available at: Argos and Very
What is it: Each pack contains one Poopsie unicorn (it’s a surprise which one you get – but there are 4 total), 4 Unicorn Food slime packets, 4 Unicorn Magic packets, 1 packet of Unicorn Sparkle, among a few other surprises, including a collectible Poopsie keychain to keep your slime in. Yep, you use all these ingredients to make your unicorn poop slime.
Why we love it: Kids LOVE surprise toys and blind bags – and the element of not knowing which unicorn you’re gonna get can really add to the magic, when you finally see your new Poopsie pal. Of course, if your child wants a specific one, it can be a bit tricky spending £50 and not knowing which way it’ll go…
That said, there are 20 surprises in this kit, so you’re guaranteed a fair few surprises to unwrap and discover. And this toy doesn’t end with the surprise, it begins there.
The real excitement is making the slime and watching the unicorn poop it out. There’s a few slime mixes here, so it won’t run out straight away… it is strangely mesmerising!
Available from: Argos and Smyths Toys
What it is: A 33cm tall, 34cm wide, 3-door stable set, that comes with a lilac-haired doll and a matching unicorn named Sunbeam, a tiara for the doll, a sheet of name stickers for the stable doors, and glittery purple saddle and reins.
Why we love it: This stable is a good size (bigger than you’d think from the picture, just bigger than a 30cm ruler) so it works well with other horses and dolls in your child’s toolbox. The opalescent lilacs make the set even more magical, and makes it easy for your child’s imagination to run wild.
Available from: Argos
Age: 4+. You’ll need to supervise young children on this one.
What it is: A 35cm x 27.5cm x 7cm box containing all your need to grow your own unicorn-themed garden. Comes with grass seeds, a bowl-like plant pot, a unicorn toy, pretend flowers, colourful mushroom, a charming well, and a host of other DIY accessories.
Why we love it: Any toy that encourages children to learn about and explore nature is a win for us. Educational, and fun too.
Plus we’d say there’s no more exciting reveal or surprise than actually getting to watch your very own garden grow. It’s satisfying for little ones, who really get to see the results of their time, effort and care. Just lovely.
Available from: John Lewis
What it is: A tub of incredibly rare unicorn poo. Well, OK, clear, stretchy, glittery goo in either pink, pale pink or purple. Also comes in larger tubs with a unicorn figure inside.
Why we love it: It’s a happy tub of silliness that’s guaranteed an excited giggle from unicorn-mad children everywhere. Our testers liked this so much that it won gold in the Best Stocking Filler category at the 2018 MadeForMums Toy Awards.
“Jaime loves this. It’s silly and fun and she loves unicorn stuff. If your child loves slime, it’s a winner!” says tester Danielle, mum to Jaime, 4. “It looks very pretty and Bodhi coos over it. Fun and not too pricey,” adds Tara, mum to Bodhi Rae, 6.
Available at: Amazon
Age: 12 months+
What it is: An animated, light-up 12cm-high unicorn that trots and flaps her wings when you press her pink heart button. Comes with a golden carrot play piece and a cute fairy friend who introduces herself and sings when you put her on 1 of the unicorn’s 2 MagicPoint locations. Needs 2 AA batteries (included).
Why we love it: A very toddler-friendly unicorn, this one. And the talking, singing fairy is adorable (and you can buy other characters separately who will also talk and sing when place on the MagicPoint locations).
Available at: Argos
Age: 18 months+
What it is: A large (95cm x 115cm) unicorn-drawn carriage with a pull-along handle that converts to a hold-in-your-(toddler)-hand rein. The floor can be removed for some small-foot-propelling action. The door opens, and the unicorn moves right and left and make a clip-clop sound effect as you trot along – and the horn lights up. Comes with a toy storage box inside and a ‘parent console’ on top. Some assembly required.
Why we love it: This unicorn update on last year’s bestselling Princess Horse & Carriage ain’t small or subtle but, to a toddler, it sure has maximum kerb appeal.
Our child testers were beside themselves with excitement at the sight of it – and their parents liked 2-way reins, the ease of pulling it along, and the storage console on top (perfect for your keys and phone).
That’s exactly why it took home silver in our Best Ride-On category at the 2018 MadeForMums Toy Awards.
Available from: Smyths Toys, Amazon and Very
Age: Officially 4+ though we’d say it’s best for 6+ and you’ll need to supervise this one.
What it is: The Aquabeads you know and love, only this time designed to make unicorn creations. The kit contains 2000 beads in 14 different colours, a play mat and a display stand, so your child can display their unicorn-themed artwork. Of course, it comes with instructions.
Why we love it: Aquabeads are great fun, bright and colourful and allow an opportunity to get arty and creative. We like that it’s all in the detail, too, so it requires real concentration and focus. Another reason why we think it’s best suited to children older than 6.
Overall, parents say this set is well worth the money if your child’s a unicorn fan.
Available from: Smyths Toys, Argos and John Lewis
What it is: A cute, cuddly 15cm unicorn complete with a sparkly horn and a silvery keepsake tin to pop her in ❤️ The tin can be personalised with your child’s name.
Why we love it: The personalisation is a lovely idea, making this an all-round beaut stocking filler. Plus, it’s a perfect little size for travel, so if you’re going way and your little one needs a familiar cuddly with them, this could be a good choice – all safely stowed in its tin.
Available at: Giftpup and Studio
What it is: A hand-controlled flying unicorn (1 of a range of 3 flying characters from Despicable Me) that’s directed by an infrared sensor in its feet. Includes an on/off handset, rechargeable battery and cable. Takes 20 minutes to charge and offers 8 minutes play time.
Why we love it: This thing can get pretty high – and fast, as our child judges found out when they put this toy through its paces in the MadeForMums Toy Awards 2017 (it won a hugely popular Bronze). And the way you can control it with your hand is super-cool. Warning: you may be fighting your child for a go with this one…
Available at: Amazon
What it is: Sparkles comes with 1 unicorn toy, a hairbrush, cupcake unicorn food and instructions. Requires 2 AAA batteries, which you’ll need to buy (though demo batteries are included).
Why we love it: This toy is well-priced, and does what it says – Sparkles dances to music your child plays, her horn lights up, makes cute unicorn sounds, brush her flowing hair, and can be fed the special cupcake unicorn food.
Available from: Smyths Toys
What it is: As well as being the best-named unicorn we’ve ever known 😂 Glenda has the surprise factor: she looks all sweet and adorable but, when you pinch behind her ears, out pops her mean face. And woah, is she mean!
Why we love it: For anyone who finds the whole unicorn craze a tad saccharine, Glenda is a fantastic antidote (though, depending on your child’s nature, you may want to warn them about Glenda’s surprise face before they see it for the first time): you can see her in action here
Available from: Menkind
What it is: A robo unicorn that you can feed, groom and play with. Comes with the Zoomer Enchanted Unicorn, an apple and a carrot accessory, a hair brush,a sugar cube accessory, and one magic want.
Instructions and a cheat sheet are included, but the 4 AA batteries you need are not, so buy them separately.
Why we love it: Your child’s new robot unicorn moves on its own, eats apples and carrots, enjoys sugar cube treats, loves getting her hair brushed and having a good dance to music. Like a live pet, your child needs to teach them: this time to sing, dance, and even do tricks. (Just press the heart button.)
We especially like that she has a secret game, which your child can access with the magic wand. After playtime, your unicorn pet goes to sleep. Lots of possibility – but a little complicated, so worth watching YouTube tutorials.
Available from: Amazon and Smyths Toys
What it is: An 18cm high unicorn with a rainbow mane and tail. Her horn glows when you stroke her back and she makes unicorn sounds. Needs 3 AAA batteries (included).
Why we love it: She’s one of the prettiest unicorns we’ve seen (and we’ve seen A LOT!) and she’s undeniably soft and cuddly. All our child testers adored her. 🦄
