Ergobaby as a brand aims to produce ergonomic baby products that enable and encourage bonding. It was founded in 2002 by a mum in Maui who wasn’t happy with the baby wearing options available. She set out to create something comfortable and easy for parents to use and with that the original Ergobaby carrier was born. It now offers multiple carrier options for parents to choose from, with all its products being ‘hip healthy’. The Aura wrap is Ergobaby’s newest lightweight unstructured baby wrap. It recently won Silver in the MadeForMums 2018 Awards in the baby slings category.

A busy mum of three, I tested the Aura on walks, taking my older children to nursery and school, and rocking out to such classics as ‘B-I-N-G-O’. Tilly, our baby, was my beautiful assistant in testing the Aura Baby Wrap.

First Impressions

I had the grey and white wrap for review and really liked the look of it. On opening the box I was struck with how stylish but neutral it was and how it would go with pretty much anything I would wear. These wraps can be a little intimidating for the uninitiated as they are a really long length of fabric. However as I have used a similar wrap previously I wasn’t fazed by this. It was also great to find that it has a handy integrated pocket.

How many seating positions does Ergobaby’s Aura Baby Wrap have?

According to the instructions and Ergobaby website, the Aura Baby Wrap was especially designed for the classic ‘inward facing front carry’ and other positions are not recommended.

Is the fabric supportive?

The fabric is lovely and soft. Stretchy but not too stretchy and my little one, Tilly, felt very supported and secure. I carried her on several long walks and she remained in a secure position the whole time.

Is the wrap comfy for parents?

Very much so. The fabric is soft and also very lightweight, weighing in at only 400g. This is compared with Ergobaby’s previous wrap which weighed in at over 900g. This has been managed by using a thinner material and the added benefit of this is that it is much cooler in the summer months. Although the fabric is thinner the quality is excellent. Unlike other carriers I have used, this was very supportive for my back on longer walks.

What is the sizing like?

At 5m in length it should fit absolutely everyone. At just over 5ft, I end up with masses of extra fabric, which you just tie around your waist. It was also big enough and stylish enough for my husband to rock it for a trip to the park.

How easy is the Aura Baby Wrap to tie?

When you’re first faced with 5 metres of fabric it can feel pretty daunting. However I quickly picked up the technique and once you have the hang of it, it is easy and quick to do. The box comes with clear, illustrated instructions and links to videos. I found watching the videos the best way to learn how to use this style of wrap. A great feature of the Aura wrap compared to the previous type I used was that the label was a marker for the middle and different stitching was used to identify the guiding edge. The fact that it’s just a length of fabric you can quickly tie makes it super versatile and it can be shoved in a bag and pulled out when needed.

More carrier reviews

Is it easy to put your baby into the Aura wrap?

Again, you need to learn the technique and it’s important to ensure you are doing it correctly. However once you have the hang of it (which happens very quickly) it is quick and easy to pop even the wriggliest baby safely and snugly into the wrap.

Is it comfy for your baby?

The material is really soft and comfortable and most of the time when I put Tilly in the carrier she was really happy and fell asleep quickly. Occasionally she fussed a bit in which case I might adjust her position slightly and then she would be happy. It is a ‘hip friendly’ carrier which means the baby’s hips are in the right position when being carried, so that is one less thing to worry about. Tilly loved being carried so close to my chest - she found it really comforting.

What age baby can the Ergobaby Aura wrap be used for?

The Aura is suitable from newborns weighing over 3.6kg, to a maximum weight of 11.3kg but has been tested safely up to 13.6kg according to the Ergobaby website. As two of my children were less than 3.6kg at birth I found the minimum weight limit a bit of a surprise - although it is quite common to have a minimum weight for baby carriers.

Can you breastfeed while wearing the wrap?

I didn’t try this, but you can breastfeed in the wrap. It also makes a good shawl for maintaining a bit of privacy when breastfeeding in public.

Is it durable?

The fabric is high quality with robust stitching and a reassuring stretch.

Is Ergobaby’s Aura easy to clean?

Yes. The Ergobaby Aura is machine washable at 30 degrees, and baby vomit cleaned off very well. However sadly it is not tumble dry-able and it takes a lot of wrapping around a clothes dryer!

Is the Aura baby wrap value for money?

Priced at £49.90 this wrap is slightly more expensive than some of its competitors, but some of the established brands are similar in price. The classic Moby wrap is also around £45, while the Baby K’Tan retails at £50 and the Je Porte Mon Bebe basic sling is £38.

It is cheaper than some of the more ‘structured’ style baby carriers such as the Connecta Baby Carrier (£68) and the Sleepy Nico baby carrier (£79).

How does it compare with other carriers/wraps you have used?

I have used two other wraps of this style previously and definitely preferred the Ergobaby Aura for its ease of use with the handy label, leading edge stitching and integrated pocket. I loved the colour and other colours available and thought they all looked very stylish. I think that wraps of this style are fantastic for younger babies as they are comfortable, well supported and close to you. This wrap particularly has a neutral design and is very lightweight. I found I did move on to the more structured carriers once my babies got a little bigger but these are considerably more expensive.

MadeForMums verdict:

This is a great wrap which is lightweight and super soft, making it comfortable for both parent and baby. I would recommend this to parents with young babies as a wonderful way to carry them around.
