Folic acid is possibly the most important nutrient during pregnancy as studies have shown it to reduce the danger of neural tube defects in babies, such as spina bifida. The Superdrug Pregnancy Care contain 400mcg of folic acid, the amount recommended for mums-to-be. They’re also high in vitamin B12, providing you with twice your RDA. Vitamin B12 helps to synthesise folic acid.

Superdrug Pregnancy Care is higher in calcium than similar products – a mineral essential for building your baby’s bones. It also contains plenty of beta-carotene, the safe form of vitamin A for pregnant women. It’s essential for the development of your baby, but the form found in animal products (retinol) carries a risk of birth defects or miscarriage in high levels.

Superdrug Pregnancy Care contains only half your RDA of iron, which can be lacking in many pregnant women.

What we love

The supplements contain no artificial flavours or preservatives and are gluten- and yeast-free. They’re suitable before conception, during pregnancy and breastfeeding. They also give you all the folic acid and B12 you need, plus calcium.

What to watch out for

They contain gelatine so aren’t suitable for vegetarians. Also, as these only contribute to have half your iron needs, you need to make sure you’re getting enough iron elsewhere. They are only available in Superdrug. You need to remember that supplements shouldn’t be used as a substitute for a healthy, varied diet, and check with your GP before taking supplements, especially ones containing iron.

Who is Superdrug Pregnancy Care best for?

Meat-eating mums-to-be who will make up for the low iron content through their diet.
