Just went for O's six week check and the GP asked about his constipation. I told her he only goes every 3-4 days and 2 out of those 4 are spent straining and screaming, resulting in a solid poo that resembles a lump of clay. She advised me to mix 15ml boiled water and 15ml freshly squeezed orange juice and give this to him once a day. Depending on the results I need to alter the concentration of it.
has anyone else given a new born anything other than milk before?

Yep i was advised to do this first time round and my pharmacist friend recommended it for P this week as she hadnt been in 3 days. As long as its dilute x

Yes i was when Zoe was constipated at about 7 days old. I didn't do it as it felt wrong to me.

I couldn't do it either, I'd have to try different avenues first

I wouldn't do that, did she not offer a small dose laxative? Or lactulose to soften up his poo?

I have heard this, although never needed to do it. I am assuming you've tried plain boiled water first, I'd do that before the orange juice. I've also heard that prune juice (diluted) works well.

Oh just remembered I have given him cooled fennel tea before, to help with his wind.

I didn't try orange juice but used prune juice mixed with cooled boiled water a few times. He was a very constipated baby and it worked a treat. It did feel a bit odd giving it to him, but it wasnt worse seeing him scream in pain, the drs wouldn't prescribe anything until he went 7days without going!

No I wouldn't, even for constipation. Have you tried baby massage? :)

I feel I've tried everything else. I mentioned lactulose but she said that trying something natural would be better. I can't listen to his screaming any longer its heart breaking, he is in so much pain

It must be awful watching your baby so upset, but I wouldn't be happy giving such a young baby orange juice.
I had a quick search for you, and this is the advice from the NHS website - it's only when a baby has been weaned do they suggest giving them diluted fruit juice (link is here www.nhs.uk/.../Treatment.aspx)
Babies who have not yet been weaned
If your baby is constipated but has not yet started to eat solid foods, the first way to treat them is to give them extra water between their normal feeds. If you are using formula milk, make the formula as directed by the manufacturer and do not dilute the mixture.
You may want to try gently moving your baby's legs in a bicycling motion or carefully massaging their abdomen (tummy) to help stimulate their bowels.

It must be hard hearing him cry in pain :( I couldn't link it but Deedee has linked the same as I was going to xx

We just gave plenty of cooled boiled water. S was terrible for getting constipated, he still is now if he doesn't drink enough. Once he was old enough for gripe water we used to give him some of that, even in water too so that it was diluted and i found that helped.

I was told to do this with my little boy when he was 6 days old and we did exactly as the GP said and he went within 30 minutes, obviously you don't put a lot of juice in and really dilute it down.

I don't understand why you wouldn't give the tiniest bit to stop the pain? Is it detrimental to them to have it mixed in such a small quantity? Not trying to start anything just curious!

I'm on day two of the OJ cocktail and O has only been once.....but less pain whilst going which is an improvement on previous days. Will give it a week before returning to the GP. I am at the stage where anything is worth a try!

E got really constipated with some medicine and I was told 1tspn of fresh apple juice not from concentrate to 8 tspn of water. Really didn't feel comfortable even with it being highly diluted so ignored the advice of the hv in my red book and went to the chemist who gave lactulose.

I think it's pretty old advice isn't it? I got old or by MIL, along with adding sugar in water. I dot like it so the gp gave movicol which is great stuff
