Has anyone had one and did it do the job even though you were under 40 weeks?
Am booked in for Monday, at 39+1 and trying not to get my hopes up, but can't help feeling a bit excited - not about the task itself of course!
I have heard the sweep will only be successful if labour is about to happen anyway? But surely MWs must have some hope for success or they wouldn't do them?

I didnt think they were allowed to do them till you were overdue? My horrible mw seen me on my due date, refused a sweep as I wasn't overdue but I sobbed and sobbed and she said she'd check to see if it was possible but I wasn't favourable so she couldn't do it x

Oh no, how awful you had to sob for it CP. Must remember also that I might not even be favourable either.
Because I'm IVF, my old fashioned Cons wanted to induce me by DD, but when I discovered those guidelines are outdated we had a chat and she suggested a sweep at 39 weeks instead, with induction at 40+4 if things didn't happen before then. I wanted to give myself a chance to go into labour 'naturally' as there was actually no medical reason for inducing me early/on my DD.
Wonder if they generally don't do them early because generally they don't do anything though, which is a PITA!

I had one at 39 weeks. I was mahoosive, very swollen and she just suggested that we did an 'unofficial' one. I don't want to dampen your spirits but it did absolutely nothing and I went on to have a further 4, he finally made an appearance just before I was going to be induced. I would go for it though, as you never know At that first sweep I was very favourable and 2cm dilated too.

That's a shame McSquirtle, 4!! You must have been on very familiar terms by then! I'd rather know if it's not likely to work at that point, so definitely don't worry about dampening my spirits - better that I don't bank too much on it, and that I can give H realistic expectations!

I would have been given a sweep at 37+2 if cervix was favourable but sadly it was closed. I'm not to go overdue on medical grounds and they want baby out as soon as my body looks like induction would work but regardless baby will be out by 40 weeks so I think doing a sweep is very much down to the individual patients circumstances and the medical professionals opinion. X

Oh mcsquirtle you've just shattered my illusions!
I've had 2 this week at 39+2 and 4. On Tuesday she could get me to 1-2cm at a push, today 2 cm easily and my waters were bulging. Whether it's done anything I don't know (if you see my ba tomorrow I think it's a yes!). I've had them because I'll be induced at term anyway because of gestational diabetes and baby was scanning 9lb6 last week! Didn't take much persuading thankfully.
Mw said I can try once more before induction so hopefully Saturday morning.

Well I had 4 sweeps, the first 2 when I was 39 weeks (also because of IVF) and they did nowt. In fact the first one was AGONY as I was probably just nowhere near ready.

I also didn't think they did them early but IVF is obviously different. I had 3 with J and was very favourable with my first, 1cm, second one I was 2cm 3rd one I wasn't anymore and had to be booked in for induction. I ended up having him the morning before I was meant to be induced.
I would still have it, you never know.
WH fingers crossed for you x

I did have a bit of a show after sweep 3 and a huuuuge proper show after sweep 4, so maybe they did something!

Thanks ladies, I am now fully readjusting my expectations! Darn and blast it but better we go without expecting too much and possibly be pleasantly surprised!
WH I really, really hope to be reading your BA tomorrow!

I had one at 38+3, but like WH, it was because I had GD and was growing a baboon. My MW said I was already nearly 4cm dilated, so think the sweep just brought things forward, rather than started things off. I think that sweep, plus a further one that night after a false labour, coupled with bouncing on a gym ball all morning after the sweep and a long walk did the trick.
WH, I *really* hope I see your BA soon! x (you too lamby, of course x)
