What to do if your child knocks its head

First aid advice from the British Red Cross. What to do when your baby bumps their head.

Scrapes and bruises are all part of growing up, but sometimes playtime can lead to more serious bumps, such as head injuries.

Most are not serious, but if the bump is accompanied by swelling, or long periods of crying, your child may need medical attention.

If she bumps her head:

  • Apply a cold compress, such as a bag of frozen veg wrapped in a tea towel
  • Monitor your child. If she becomes drowsy or begins to vomit, seek medical advice immediately
  • Stay calm and comfort her
