What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic treatment focuses on aligning the spine to reduce pressure on the nerves and spinal chord. It manipulates the body’s joins to relieve irritation and can also help to neutralise chemical changes in your body caused by pregnancy.

Chiropractors believe that if the vertebra in the spine are displaced they can press against nerves and cause pain and even disease.  Although considered an alternative medicine, it is well respected in the medical community. Your chiropractor may also recommend lifestyle changes to compliment the treatment.

Because of its focus on the back, chiropractic can help reduce backache and encourage better ways to carry your bump to reduce soreness. Similarly, it can help with pelvic and lower back pain as well as sciatica and nausea.

Postnatal chiropractic

Again, due to it’s benefits for your back, chiropractic is recommended after giving birth to help realign your posture. Particularly if your labour was difficult, this can help your body recover. Childbirth can also cause your upper back muscles to become tight which may interfere with proper nerve flow to the breasts. Chiropractic adjustment of the spine can help decrease breastfeeding problems in this case.

Chiropractic safety

Chiropractic practitioners who regularly treat mums-to-be usually have a separate table with a break away section for when your bump makes it uncomfortable to lie face down.  After the 5th month you should never lie on your stomach for an adjustment without this sort of table or a pregnancy pillow.
