Midwife Nikki replies: Postnatal depression (PND) affects about one in 10 women – and a previous history can make you more vulnerable.
However, the reasons you were depressed last time may no longer be issues and, as this is your second baby, you should be more prepared.
Having a supportive network of family and friends, who know your history, is a great starting point. Recruit them to look after you by helping with meals and the baby so you can catch up on sleep.
Also, watch for the PND warning signs, such as excessive tearfulness and loss of appetite.
