The brand Baby Jogger was born in 1984 and was originally to fill the gap in the market for sporty parents who wanted to continue exercising with their babies and toddlers. However, the brand has grown far beyond 3-wheeler exercise buddies and they have created innovative solutions for all exercise levels and terrains.

All Baby Jogger’s buggies incorporate patented ‘Quick-Fold Technology’ so they can be collapsed with one hand and all products have an emphasis on safety, where they meet of exceed industry standards for the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) and EN-1888.

They have won multiple awards and continue to be a choice for style-conscious parents, who may be considering other pricier buggy brands like Bugaboo, iCandy and UppaBaby.

This stylish buggy continues the success of the Baby Jogger brand and is a sleek combination of the City Select and City Versa. This is one of the rare breeds of buggy that really is ideal for city use and off-road or countryside outings. It has great suspension but is easy to steer and folds up with a simple pull of a strap – one handed and can be easily transported or stored. It is super flexible, with a reclining, reversible seat and it can also be used with a car seat, pram attachment or Baby Jogger ‘glider board’, so will take your little one from birth to much later. A fab design and super-comfortable ride make this buggy a firm favourite!

At £499.99, the pushchair is comparable in price to the Britax Affinity 2 (£499), and BabyStyle Oyster2 (£555), sitting neatly in the mid-range buggy bracket.

My 22-month-old daughter was lucky enough to ride around in this buggy as we tested it on the school run with her older sister, through the bumpy woods when it was dry and muddy, around crowded shops and on public transport.

First Impressions?

Many of my friends use the Baby Jogger City Mini and rave about it, so I had high expectations for this buggy. It certainly didn’t disappoint! Getting the chassis and seat out of the box and fixing the wheels and canopy was a complete doddle - no hubby needed for assistance on this occasion! I was surprised about just how compact it was – the box really was small but everything was in there and it slotted together perfectly.

I was sent the buggy in taupe and it is also available in indigo. Personally I love these subtle-yet-stylish unisex colours but I know some other mums might prefer some more colourful options.

The buggy is suitable for children from six months to around three years old. For younger babies, you would need to buy a Baby Jogger Deluxe Pram carrycot (£199) so they are flat.

Why your newborn needs a lie-flat buggy

The buggy can also be used with the City GO car seat (£119.99), using the City GO car seat adaptors (£28.99) and you can also accessorise with a Belly Bar (£25.99).

Buyer’s guide to travel systems

If you have another small person in tow, it can be used with the Glider Board (£69.99). The buggy itself retails at £499.99 and all of these additions do add up, but I have tested many buggies and thought this once was excellent and a brilliant all-round option, for a family who enjoy outings to busy shops and areas, alongside countryside strolls. I really feel that the promise of flexibility and versatility is fulfilled with this product.

How comfortable does it feel for your little one?

I could barely prise my daughter out of this buggy, she loved it so much! The seat can be slotted in either direction, so you can interact with your little one or they can enjoy the view and the seat can be reclined with one hand for ease.

The padded and adjustable five-point harness allowed me to clip her in safely. The seat felt really roomy and comfortable and the footrest could also be adjusted up and down for height. The large lightweight and durable wheels with all-round suspension really made for a smooth ride.

One day we went through a particularly boggy woodland area and my daughter would be thrown around in her Bugaboo Bee, while in this buggy she practically glided through!

What do you think of the seat size?

The seat is large, and has a seat back height of 56.3cm, with a width at the shoulders of 30.4cm.

The seat could be front or rearward facing, so ideal to take you through from six months to pre-schooler.

Tell us about the City Premier’s hood

The very large UV50+ canopy has a magnetic peek-a-boo window, so you can easily check on your little one.

Sadly (for me!) the days of sleeping when out and about seem to have passed, but this is definitely a useful addition for mums of small babies. The magnet means there is no noise when you try to take a look!

What do you think of the fold system –could you really do it with one hand?

The seat can be folded either way (which was very handy) by using the clips on the back and with a simple pull of the strap the buggy collapses. To be completely honest, this took a few tries, whilst watching the YouTube video to master but once I got the hang of it, it was really easy and it can definitely be done using just one hand.

The built-in carry strap was an excellent addition, meaning you can carry it around. I founded the buggy quite heavy in comparison to others but this is a quality and sturdy product with large wheels, so this is understandable.

Is it compact when folded and was it easy to store?

Yes, we now have a Volvo where you can park almost anything but this is very compact when folded and I think would easily fit in the boot of our old Golf.

The City Premier measures 81.5cm x 63.5cm x 34.5cm when folded.

What do you think of the height of the buggy?

The buggy was at a great height and the telescopic handle height is ideal for all heights. The handle was soft and comfortable and pops up and down easily.

What did you think of the hand brake?

I loved the handle-operated brake, which was located on the right side of the handlebar – no more stubbed toes in flip-flops!

Would you recommend for use from birth?

Yes, but you would need to buy the Baby Jogger Deluxe Pram (£199.99) to use this from the start.

However, this item, alongside the car seat and adaptors, make this a versatile choice. A drawback of this buggy is the fact that is does not include a rain cover as standard.

What is the basket like?

This is a really great shopping basket – perfect for grocery trips and carrying your little one’s stuff. It can be accessed from the front and the sides. Everything about the buggy screams quality and the basket was no different!

How easy is it to push and does the all-wheel suspension make a difference?

In a word – yes! I tested this buggy across all types of terrain, including woodland and parks, busy London streets and everything in between and it was brilliant. It was smooth, easy to push and manoeuvre and my daughter adored it.

MadeforMums verdict:

This is a seriously impressive piece of kit! Versatile, stylish and sturdy, it really does fulfil all its promises and more. Fab features like the one-hand fold and hand brake, combined with the fact that it provides such a smooth and easy ride and I would heartily recommend it to other mums.
