How did we choose our 10 of the Best?
Our 10 of the Best lists are compiled by qualified and experienced parenting journalists. They rely on a number of sources, including our independent reviews and feedback from our home testing panel and MadeForMums club.
Each year thousands of products are put through their paces by hundreds of parents across the country on behalf of MadeForMums, to ensure we’re bringing you honest and true reviews and recommendations.
When testing these highchairs, we considered age suitability, size, portability, multi-use, ease of cleaning, weight and whether there’s a harness.
Our list is not an ordered ranking. Instead, it’s a carefully selected group of tried-and-tested products, each of which we believe is best for a different situation or requirement.

What to look for when buying a highchair
Age suitability
Highchairs are generally suitable from around 6 months, or when your baby can sit up on their own and you begin weaning. Some newer models come with padded inserts and recline functions to make them suitable from birth, which can be useful if you want to keep your baby off the ground while you’re in the kitchen.
Size
If your kitchen is on the smaller side, look for a compact highchair that can fold away neatly. Some traditional highchairs have flared legs, which can take up more floor space.
Portability
Some highchairs are light and compact when folded, making them easier to move or fit in the car. Others are designed to attach directly to dining chairs or tables, although these may not offer the same support as larger padded chairs.
Multi-use
Many highchairs now convert from traditional highchair to booster seat, toddler chair or child seat. These can cost more upfront, so it’s worth deciding whether you want one long-lasting product or prefer to buy different, cheaper options over time.
Ease of cleaning
Mealtimes can get very messy, especially during weaning. Look for wipe-clean materials, removable trays and straps that can be washed. Avoid designs with lots of nooks and crannies if quick cleaning is a priority.
Harness
A 5-point safety harness offers more security than a lap belt alone. The harness should conform to safety standard BS 6684: 1989.
Weight
If you plan to move your highchair from room to room, check the weight before buying. Wheels can also be useful, depending on the design.
When can you start to use a highchair?
With many highchairs, your baby needs to be around 6 months old with good head and neck control in order to sit safely. At this age, make sure the safety harness fits well, your baby is supported and there is enough padding for comfort.
Some highchairs now offer full recline and add-on newborn pods, which can be useful if you want your baby close by and off the floor while you’re in the kitchen.
How to use a highchair safely
Safety is key when choosing and using a highchair. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) recommends:
- Look for the British Standard EN 14988:2006 safety standard mark
- Choose a highchair with a 5-point harness
- Choose a highchair with a crotch bar or strap to prevent your baby slipping out
- Look for a removable or adjustable tray so it’s easy to get your baby in and out
- Position the highchair away from solid surfaces your child could kick or push against
Always strap your baby in safely and securely, keep them in sight and never leave them unattended in their highchair.
