Pros

  • Longevity, superior safety technology includes side impact features and reduction of forward movement in an accident, 3 recline positions, comfortable

Cons

  • Not easy to move in and out of car, can only be secured using Isofix, quite pricey

This is the latest version of the Britax Römer Advansafix group 1/2/3 seat. To quote the Britax MD, it offers “superior safety, comfort, longevity and a beautiful, sleek look”.

It’s suitable for children weighing from 9 to 36kg, so it should see your child through from nine months to 12 years old.

The car seat uses Isofix anchor points and it also features Britax’s patented Top Tether system, which stops the car seat from rotating and reduces any forward movement in the event of a collision.

Designed and produced in Germany, it has a built-in, 5-point harness for smaller children, but once they reach 15kg-18kg, you use the Flip & Grow function to secure them with the car’s seat belt instead.

Tested by:

Michelle is grandma to two-year-old Clay. They tested the Britax Römer Advansafix IV R group 1/2/3 car seat in her Audi Q3.

First impressions of the Britax Römer Advansafix IV R car seat?

I liked the look of the seat – it was modern, sturdy and robust, but had a very smooth and sponge-like feel, which would make it very comfortable, especially on a long journey.

Who is the seat suitable for?

A child of at least 9kg who can sit upright on their own.

Is the Britax Römer Advansafix IV R car seat easy to install?

With an Isofix-friendly car, like my Audi Q3, it’s a very simple procedure. All you do is pull out the Isofix bar, which is situated behind the rear seat belts, and simply slide the seat into place. It takes less than 10 minutes to set up.

Is there anything you would have wanted to know before buying the car seat?

Yes – it is not compatible for all cars. We tried to install the seat in a 2013 Nissan Duke, but it couldn’t be used in that vehicle as it doesn’t have any Isofix points. Before you make a decision to buy, I suggest trying the car seat out in your car first.

Was it easy to strap your child into the Britax Römer Advansafix IV R car seat?

This was a bit tricky because there are two options, depending on the weight of your child. Up to 18kg, you can use the 5-point harness, but once they get bigger you must strap them in using the seat belt provided in the car. Clay is just at the age where he is transitioning from a 5-point harness to a seat belt, and I personally found it a bit worrying that he didn’t look as secure when using the car’s own seat belt as he did when using the 5-point harness.

Does the car seat feel sturdy?

It feels very sturdy and safe.

Is the Britax Römer Advansafix IV R easy to get in and out of the car?

Once you know how the Isofix works, it’s quite straightforward to take the seat in and out. However, because the seat is so securely fitted in the car, you wouldn’t want to do this on a regular basis.

How many seat positions does the Britax Romer ADVANSAFIX IV R have?

The Britax Römer offers three recline positions using the seat’s EasyRecline technology, and the seat can be adjusted during use to accommodate a baby/toddler should they fall asleep.

Is there anything unique about the seat?

The design of the seat, which allows much more freedom of movement, while still keeping your child safely strapped in.

What do you think of the size of the Britax Romer ADVANSAFIX IV R car seat?

The car seat is a good size and there is clearly room for Clay to grow.

Do you think your child will fit the seat when they’re 12?

Realistically, no. It looks safe and secure now, while he is two years old, but I cannot envisage him using the seat and being safe and comfortable at 12 years old.

Was the Britax Römer Advansafix IV R car seat comfortable for your child?

Clay loved sitting in the seat – he looked comfortable and there was a lot of space for him to move and stretch out.

Is the headrest supportive?

The headrest looks nice and comfortable and there is more than enough space for a growing child. It is V-shaped, which controls the movement of the child’s head in the event of an accident. It is also ergonomic and height-adjustable to stop your child getting an annoying crick in their neck should they fall asleep in the seat.

What do you think of the seat design?

It’s a sleek design that gives it an overall polished and plush finish.

Is the Britax Römer ADVANSAFIX IV R easy to clean?

Yes, you can wipe it down or quickly remove the covers for easy cleaning in the washing machine without removing the seat harness.

Is the car seat value for money?

Very much so. It is strong, safe and durable. Although some may find it a little bit pricey, the Römer has been beautifully designed to a high specification and Britax have included every safety feature in the event of an accident.

Where can I buy the Britax Römer ADVANSAFIX IV R?

It is available from Uber Kids and Boots.

It’s easy to fit and offers enough space for a growing child.
