Pros

  • Value for money, sturdy, light, steerable on different terrains, accommodates tall toddlers, unpadded handles are surprisingly ergonomic

Cons

  • Small shopping basket, not suitable from birth, reclining function is trickier when child is seated, sun shade is not as sturdy as some

If you’re after a basic, light buggy that’s sturdy enough for more than holiday use, the Chicco Xplorer Stroller is a worthy contender. And that value price tag can’t be sniffed at!

Suitable from 6 months to around 3years, the Chicco Xplorer Stroller was designed to provide a lightweight and compact alternative to bulky prams and travel systems. It shares many of the Chicco CT0.6’s features but comes with an adjustable sun shade and a carry strap that is attached directly to the frame. A raincover and shopping basket are also included.

The recommended retail price of the Chicco Xplorer Stroller is £54.99. However, it can often be found at a discounted price at places such as Argos, so it’s worth shopping around. I bought mine for £40!

Chicco is one of the world’s largest nursery brands and has been designing and manufacturing products for babies and young children since 1958. Founded by Italian dad Pietro Catelli, it aims to deliver high quality and durable indoor and outdoor products. I grew up in Italy and my parents used Chicco products as it’s the leading brand there. This is still the case today, as friends and relatives swear by the reliability of Chicco products. Although the Xplorer has not won any awards yet, Chicco products often do. The Xplorer sells well and there are several positive customer reviews on the internet.

What we love

The Chicco Xplorer Stroller is light, has good swivel wheels with locking mechanism and is easy to steer even on bumpy terrain. We love going for walks in the countryside so we needed something sturdy that wouldn’t fall apart when pushed on uneven footpaths and was light enough to be lifted over stiles. Michela, 3, is a tall and heavy toddler and the Chicco Xplorer Stroller seems to cope well.

The Xplorer folds and unfolds really easily, which is great for travelling by car or public transport. To fold it, two locks need to be released - the secondary safety lock prevents accidental closures. A plastic clip holds the folded stroller in place and you can carry it on your shoulder using the strap fixed to the frame.

The raincover is easy to attach and detach, which is handy in variable weather!

What to watch out for

When folded, the Chicco Xplorer Stroller is on the long side but it fits in our compact car’s boot and we can easily place it on top of bags still.

The backrest, which features a two-position adjustment, is reclined by unfastening the zips on each side. As stated in the manual, it is more difficult to do when a child is seated in the stroller because of his/her weight against it.

The basket is small and it’s not very easy to access when Michela is sitting in the buggy. The fabric can’t be removed from the seat for cleaning, so you have to wash it while attached to the frame. That said, the seat is made of strong material and Michela finds it comfortable.

Who is the Chicco Xplorer Stroller best for?

Parents after a light alternative that can handle bumps and not break the budget.

MadeForMums verdict

The Chicco Xplorer Stroller offers good value for money, not just because the price tag is so low but also because it’s sturdy, light and easy to steer on different terrains. With its quick-folding mechanism, it is ideal for daily use and for travelling. With its seat placed lower than in other lightweight models, your tall toddler will be accommodated.
