Since having Iris, people seme to be obsessed about her birth weight.
'That must have smarted'
'Only gas and air? But she was so big!'
'She's not teeny is she'
'Wow, *good* size!'
'In the pool, on your own? How big was she again....?'
TBH she didn't seem big when born, came out in a couple of pushes, only a couple of stitches, home quickly. My first labour with 6lb15oz N was SO much worse.
Was Iris *really* that big? Or is it just something people say? She certainly seems tiny to me but everyone seems to have her marked as a 'big baby'!

Proportionately compared to average I guess she was fairly big but right now I'd be ecstatic with a baby that 'small'!
It's all relative. I think of 10lb as big because a lot of people I know have had big babies, I think average weight is 7lb4 or something but to me that seems small. Guess it depends who else you know

C was 9lb, but he had a huge head, and was in the wrong position which probably contributed to the problems I had getting him out! But he still seemed a tiny baby (unless near other new borns) and because he was short (still is) I think that made him seem bigger because of all the baby fat IYKWIM.
I think it is just something people say to make conversation really, anything about 7lb and they probably think it's big and going to have been difficult to get out.

I don't think it's that big but then both of mine were 9lb+. I guess it's bigger than average but I think you hear of way more 8lbers being born now than 7lbers

Yes she is bigger than an average newborn but she is still teeny. People sometimes just comment for the sake of it. My MIL thought E was massive at 7lb 12oz as all hers were around 6lbs. When M was born she told me he was more like 'how a real newborn should be'

Perhaps I'm the same as you WH, I see big as being 9lb8oz and over I think as people I know have had bigger babies.
She's still my little girl
ETA - "More like a newborn should be" WS?! Blimey!!!
One lady said to me "oooh she must be off the centile scale" Er no, she's only just over the 75th...

I think of babies in the 8lb range as being average TBH.
I get comments of "oh, you must have a bucket", when I tell them I had a 9lb 9oz baby, and didn't need stitches. G!ts!!!
Getting my 9lber out, was LOADS easier than trying to get my 2lb dot out. Ended up with an emergency CS to get him out.
I think it's just what people say.

A was 9lb and I think if he was 1oz lighter it would seem so much smaller. It's definitely on the larger side, but not unusual at all. I think of 10ln as big.
It's more to do with position of baby than size anyway.

I don't think its big, C was only 2oz bigger than that when born. But I did notice she was bigger than some of the other newborns in the ward afterwards.
I think people just want to make some sort of comment to acknowledge the birth, and thats probably all they can think to say. I always think a comment about big size is a positive comment though, but maybe that's because all babies in our family are fairly big.

Having had Iris cuddles, she's not big at all!
The average is getting bigger. It used to be around 6lbs 7oz but it's nearer 7lbs 7oz now.

PS - you KNOW it's just people making mindless baby chat, right?
If she was diddy they'd be telling you how small she was, over 10lbs and they'd be making jokes about c sections.
Nod and smile babes x

i think its pretty normal isnt it? i dontk now many babies though so im probably not a good judge.
01/05/2013 at 12:43
It's bigger than average obviously but not huge. To me anything over 7lbs is big as I have small babies! But then I don't constantly make comments about baby size to people, they are what they are. People just need to make conversation sometimes no matter how dull it is.

I would have said babies in the 7lb something range would be "average".
My babies were 8lb9 9lb2 and 9lb4 - I love big babies!
01/05/2013 at 13:09
Id say it was on the big end of normal. Anything 9lb+ for me os big.. bit i jad a 5lb6er them a 7lb5er who seemed huge (oh and bigger one done the least damage!)

I think, as with the whole pregnancy/baby stuff everyone feels they have to make a comment - and usually say something stupid! As others have said the average baby weight has increased. M was 8lb 8oz but I didn't class her as big. If your baby had been 3lb something I'm sure someone would have said something equally daft like 'I bet you didn't feel a thing!'
As with lots of these comments - in one ear and straight out the other! xx

If you are a 5ft skinny nothing, then yes 8lb12 probably seems big. I'm 6ft1 and would have more shocked if I had a 5lb tiddler, than the 9lb10 baby that popped out!
