In his role as patron of the English Schools Swimming Association, Prince William has backed the campaign for improved swimming lessons for pirmary school children on a video for the BBC.
The campaign to get more young children swimming follows a report from the Amateur Swimming Association that more than half of 7-11 year olds are not able to swim a length of a standard swimming pool.
Only 2% of schools surveyed delivered the government's recommended 22 hours a year of swimming lessons. The national curriculum for schools in England says children should be able to swim at least 25m unaided by the end of primary school.
Prince William says that not only can swimming have a transformative effect on children's life but is also the only sport that can save lives.
