Travel cots are portable, safe places for babies and toddlers to sleep when away from home. They’re lightweight, have collapsible sides and fold into a portable format with a carry handle, making them useful for holidays, breaks and overnight stays.

We’ve analysed the travel cot market and rigorously tested a range of different models to find the best ones for different families and travel styles. Whether you’re looking for something safe for a newborn, a bedside option for co-sleeping or a roomy cot for an older toddler, you’ll find it here. Some travel cots can also double as playpens, although if that’s your main priority, take a look at our best playpens for babies and toddlers.

We’ve also got cosy bedding inspiration, plus our tried-and-tested picks of the best buggy covers and best pram fans for warmer trips. For older children, see our guide to the best toddler travel beds.

How we chose the best travel cots

When testing travel cots, we considered size and weight limits, mattress quality, ease of assembly and folding, portability, extra features and overall value for money.

Our recommendations are compiled by qualified and experienced parenting journalists, using a mix of independent reviews, MadeForMums Awards testing, and feedback from our home testing panel and The MadeForMums Club.

We don’t rank these in any particular order; each product is here because it stands out for a different family, budget or travel need.

Joie Kubbie Sleep Travel Cot

Why we chose it: With its drop-side bedside function and bassinet mode, this is one of the most practical travel cots for the newborn stage.

The pull-and-click functionality takes a few tries to master, but Joie has a great instructional video to help.

Why do I need a travel cot?

One of the biggest benefits of a travel cot is portability. Unlike a standard cot, which is often bulky and made from wood, a travel cot is designed to fold down quickly and pack into the car with much less fuss. Some of the most compact options on our list will even fit in a suitcase or overhead locker alongside a cabin-approved stroller.

Travel cots also mean you don’t have to rely on whatever sleeping arrangements are available when you arrive. For babies and toddlers who travel often, a familiar cot can help bedtime feel more settled in a new environment.

What to look for when buying a travel cot

Portability: Travel cots are made to be lighter and easier to store than standard cots, but they still fold into quite different shapes. Some pack down into a long rectangular bundle that’s easier for public transport, while others fold flatter and suit the boot of a car better.

Weight: Weight varies a lot. On our list, some options come in under 7kg, while others are closer to 10.5kg. Think about how often you’ll use it and whether you’ll be lifting it in and out of the car, carrying it upstairs or taking it on public transport.

Ease of assembly and folding: The best travel cots go up in minutes or even seconds, but many have a particular order that needs to be followed. If you’ll only use yours occasionally, an intuitive fold may matter more than one that gets easier with practice.

Age suitability: Some travel cots are suitable from birth, while others are better once your baby is a little older. Bassinets and raised newborn inserts can make the early months easier, especially for night wakings, and some models also work as bedside cribs.

Mattress: Travel cot mattresses are usually thinner and firmer than standard cot mattresses. That helps them fold more compactly and also supports safe sleep. Most manufacturers advise against adding an extra mattress.

Extra functions: Some travel cots also work as playpens, while others include changing stations, storage pockets, wheels or insect nets. Think about which extras you’ll genuinely use.

How, when and where will you use your travel cot?

How often you’ll use your travel cot makes a big difference to what matters most. If it’s mainly for monthly overnight stays with family, weight may not be the top priority. But if you’ll be packing it into the car or carrying it regularly, a lighter model will quickly feel worth paying for.

For holidays in hot climates, look for breathable mesh panels and a mattress that doesn’t trap too much heat. These features improve airflow and can help your child sleep more comfortably. Some travel cots also include, or offer separately, insect nets and shades.

If you’re flying, it’s worth checking your airline’s baggage rules before you buy. A compact, lightweight model with an easy fold may be the most practical option.

How much does a travel cot cost?

Our list includes travel cots from £35 to more than £200, so there’s a wide range of budgets covered. At every price point, we expect a safe, stable and comfortable place for your child to sleep.

Budget-friendly options can work very well, but they’re usually more basic and less likely to include extras such as a changing station, bedside functionality or a premium mattress. At the higher end, we’d expect a more thoughtful fold, stronger materials and added features that genuinely make travel easier.

There are also some very strong mid-range options under £100, particularly if you don’t need lots of extras and simply want something practical, portable and comfortable enough for nights away.
