Huge (black pointy) hat tip to ace facepainter Ruth Crowley from our Top Testers Club: you can see her turning her daughter Annabel's face all witchy in our video guide – and it's Annabel who's our model for the photo step-by-step guide, too.

  • Planning a different Halloween look for your child? We've also got step-by-step face-painting guides for a vampire, a ghost, a scary pirate and – of course – a pumpkin.

Here's how to face-paint a witch, step by step

What you'll need

  • Face paints in the following colours: green, blue or purple, black (see 4 of the best face paints for children, below)
  • Damp sponge
  • Face-paint brush or make-up brush

Step 1

Child with their face painted green

Use a damp sponge to apply a layer of green paint all over your child's face as a base.

Step 2

Child with their face painted green with purple eyes and lips

With the brush, paint blue or purple over the entire eyelid and eyebrow finishing in a point at the outside temple. Apply the same colour in a line under the eye, sweeping to a point at the top of the cheekbone. Paint the lips in the same shade, going beyond the natural shape of the mouth on the upper lip to exaggerate the 'cupid's bow'.

Step 3

Clean your brush and then, using the black paint, create thick, bushy eyebrows by painting a thick line along the upper edge of the colour around the eyes and then adding 3 or 4 upward strokes. Add black lines at the outside corner of the eyes, too.

Step 4

Add some witchy embellishments to the cheeks and chin. We've added a moon, a star, a beauty spot and a cat.

And then you're done!
