Children: a driving distraction

Our children cause us to make mistakes on the road

Driving with your child
What's cute as a button but more distracting than a mobile phone? Yep, that'd be your child in the back seat of the car!

The biggest distraction for parents when driving isn’t mobile phones, radio tuning or arguments over map reading – it’s our children.

A quarter of parents surveyed said they were distracted by their offspring in the back seat when on the road. And of these mums and dads, 70% said they’d missed a turn because of it. Scarily, 24% said it caused them to go over the speed limit. Even more worryingly, 6% had skipped a red light.

The survey, of 755 parents on the Tesco Baby & Toddler Club’s Mums’ Choice panel, found 16% of parents even arranged for one of them to sit in back with the children to make car trips easier.

If you’re planning on driving anywhere this summer, check out or pick of travel toys to keep tots entertained on long and short journeys.

Oh I have to admit my driving is terrible-before the kids!!! I'm hopeless-big fella once asked to see my lisence when we first got together!!!!!!!!

All points removed now and happy to report no speeding,no mistakenly driving to properties I no longer reside at.

In fact I pretty much walk everywhere for the safety of everyone, and big fellas sanity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have three points on my licenseActually nothing exciting.I did 38mph in a 30 zone.It was a wide road looked like it should be a 40,couldn't see a sign. There was a school on the road, but I didn't know the area and it was a Saturday night in August, but rules are rules.Kids in the car and it was coming back from our wedding so I  was distracted.Think the points should be spent soon.I don't generally speed,my van doesn't go that fast.

I frequently take wrong turns with kids in the car.Missed my turn off on the way home from holiday once and ended up driving home through London with a hugely over laden trailer and roof rack, cos the kids were arguing in the car.Of course then DH starts moaning we'll never get home and gets a shut up,don't think any rude words.Deathly silence in the car and of  course I got us home.

Harry was 3 when he used to sit in the back and say "I think Mummy's lost again".Now I use the SatNav so I don't get lost, which usually works, but if not I have someone to blame.I do still forget where we're going sometimes,Sat Nav helps with that too.

Our one and only accident happened when the kids were playing up.Erin was refusing to sit back in her seat, instead leaning on the one in front so I was busy telling her if we were hit from behind she'd hit her head.I can't say for definate that my mind was fully on the road ahead and I was certainly stressed over Erin playing up.As I remember it,the car in front stopped to give way to oncoming traffic outside a school. There were lots of taxis waiting as it's a SEN school so I was going slow as you do,and I stopped to give way too.The car behind just ran in the back of us.He was at fault, but maybe I was a little too cos I didn't even see him till he hit us.I was ready  to go into one when I got out the car,but he was so apologetic and worried about the car full of kids we just sorted it out calmly.

Did reverse into the neighbours car once.We had an estate car with three rows of seats with the high back boosters in the last row so I didn't see the tiny Fiat Uno behind us.It was obviously there when we got in the car, then the kids started fighting,we were late for school,I reversed, then bang, but no damage,so I didn't tell anyone

Shouldn't be driving should I.I accidently washed the paper bit of my licence this week too.
